Anamorphic 2.35 in FCP?

Hello, I'm shooting with a 35mm adapter (Letus Extreme) on an HVX 200. I'm experimenting with a Lomo 35mm anamorphic lens in both HD 16x9 and SD 4x3.

My question is how do I extract the full 2.35 frame in FCP? I've imported as anamorphic 16x9 and made sure the clip was set anamorphic. Then in the motion menu I used the distort tab and stretched the frame to 2.35:1.

Is this the right way to do this? It seems to me that it looks a bit off and looses some resolution when exported. How would one do it if the media originated on anamorphic 35mm film and was captured in FCP squeezed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks.

That is the only way to modify the aspect ratio that I have ever heard of. If the media was originally shot on 35mm, I believe that you would have to scan the film at a very high resolution since you would be stretching it out later. Not sure, but maybe other NLEs might be better for this work.

Easiest thing I can think of is to simply reinterpret the footage with a different Pixel Aspect Ratio. Then you don't have to re-render anything, because FCP is just displaying the footage differently (normal). Figuring out the exact number you'd need to use is a bit more math than I'd be willing to do at the moment (at 5:30 am), but I don't think it'd be that complicated to figure out. Although I just noticed your question was from over 2 months ago, so I hope you figured it out...

keep it as 16:9 and then mask to 2.35... This is how 2.35 films are put on DVD and Blu-Ray. For posting on a website, you can crop it on export in Compressor.

Exactly right- the only aspect ratios that are supported in video are 16:9 and 4:3. 2.35 is 16:9 with an additional matte imposed to maintain the ratio. And on quicktime you can make it whatever you want.
