I've been doing the whole Web 2.0 thing since I was in high school, and one thing I learned early on from all that user interaction is that the internet is for jerks. People always seemed far more antagonistic and pugnacious on the net than they would have the nerve to be in real life.
Have you noticed that for the most part filmmaking forums don't fall into this trap? DVXUser, DVinfo and reduser are all far more friendly than say any of the photography forums I've ever been on and far more than technology or sports forums. Any idea on why this is? Is it because the focus is on actually creating art rather than defending the latest PC that one purchased? Or possibly because filmmaking is more of a collaborative art (photography forums are also about creating art but they're far more vitriolic).
Sure flamewars happen, but look at the 35mm Adapters forum. When it started I figured it was going to become one big war room between different people arguing that their adapter was awesome and that the others sucked. But most of the "which adapter is best" posts never degrade into that.
