External monitor ideas

i hate how my spelling is awful.. damn you charles for making me look like an idiot :)

are you really gonna do it rawfa? :)

"Gonna" is one of my (becoming increasing apparent) Americanisms. I got caught saying "gas station" instead of "petrol station" the other day. I'm ashamed to be an Australian :(

I need a solution like this Cowon A3 for one or both of my DVX rigs. Need it mounted to the cam for M2 adapter shoots- more for shot framing/flip while dollying or handheld with the M2, some focus etc. So SD is okay for me.

I was looking at the Varizoom 7 inch (as well as the marshall 4 inch that Disjecta mentioned a while back)... I have both in cart at BH, and was going to pull trigger on one of em with FEDEX for a shoot next weekend, unless this COWON is workable...

Anyone have feelings on the Varizoom/Marshall? Anyone tried this Cowon yet? ...and how the heck do I mount the dang thing to a DVX? I'll be happy to be the guinea pig and order it later today to try on the shoot, if someone tells me how to mount the durned thing, without a bunch of gaff tape being involved.

why don't you just buy both from B&H and if you don't like them, you can send them back for full refund (I believe) if you do it in a reasonable time. The only hit you would take if you didn't like either of them would be the cost of shipping.

If I lived in NY I would not give it a second thought. But it would suck having wait so long for it to arrive and then having to ship the thing back.

hi guys,

the resolution of the screen on the ex1 is actually 640 x 480. the 1920 spec comes from multiplying each pixel by three (for each red, green and blue dot), which has lately become a common - and quite deceiving - practice by lcd manufacturers. it clearly does not correspond for what we normally understand as the actual resolution of the display!

i have the following screen (the site is in german though):

http://www.carlights.de/stand-einbau-monitore/7-tft-touchscreen-monitor-cm132.html

it is very good, same resolution as the marshall: 800 x 480. i opened it and removed the touchscreen (a transparent senson on top of the actual screen) since it deteriorated the image quite a bit. i also rotated the panel inside the case and removed the cables i wasn't using. it is very light and it is very sharp! i just use the video input and get an excellent image. for focusing and framing it is more than enough. perhaps using the vga input plus a converter could yield even better results.

another interesting product is the following:

http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/archos_605fwifi/index.html?country=global&lang=en

it is smaller but has a very high resolution. it seems to have the very same panel as the one on the ex1. it has an internal battery and with a small adapter it takes video-in and can even record the signal. seems perfect! i haven't tested it though.

The Cowan A3 for sure does composite in so that's no problem for your dvx, so you should get it. We wanna know if it does component in, that's the big things to us because we've got hd cameras.

You should be fine though get it and get one of those things that holds ipods in cars or something to mount it.

That's what I was thinking. As for the component video in for HD display, I am not sure, but it SEEMS like it's more of an HD output kinda deal...

The specs from the User Manual PDF at the COWON site are kinda unclear- it shows a couple S-Video/Component configs... to RECORD you either use the mini adapter cable with the composite W, R, Y.

OR you use the S-Video from the component cable, and the red and white from the RCA for audio, and you leave the other stuff unplugged. So I guess this is the same for using it as a viewer? So are we looking at S-Video as top resolution, and not true component?

It only seems to offer the component output when using a device with component plugs- like an external monitor. Which is still pretty cool.

Here is the link, if you guys can figure it out:

http://www.cowonglobal.com/download/file/manual/COWONA3/A3_ENmanual_1.2EN.pdf

Again, for my SD purposes, it looks like it more than rocks. I'll post here if I grab one, and when I can borrow an HVX to goof around with it.

Good luck to youse guys too- looks like a kick a$$ little unit packed with features for the price, though. Also, never hurts to have a rough draft, backup video recording source (even if its not a final render quality via firewire) to scope out clips on set or in video tent quickly, for when the cam is on a crane, or when DV rack/Laptop is not an option. That's worth the price alone, I'd think.

The lossless compression HD recording and new DaVinci TI chip seem promising, if it truely delivers on that front. Heck, even the FM channels are cool- great for the craft services tent to find out what time it's going to rain on the gear.

B&H Specs seem to list only 1 x RCA composite in for video...

and composite, component, S-Video for output. This is the Readers digest version of my theory from last post. Seems like no compon HD in, only out.
