Feature film shot with SGpro

Hi,

Im posting from the hotel on day four of the month long shoot for fairly low budget feature film Schrodiger's Girl. Its about paralel universes and all sorts of weird stuff like that, I havn't read the script fully.

Anyway, we are shooting on the SG pro using FD lenses. Most of the time I am using my unit, as the DoP's SG is the flip unit in the conventional snorkel down configuration and my system with the riser is sturdier. My official job is steadicam op, but I have been doing some focus pulling and general camera work too. I have posted some of the pics that I have so far. The shoot in all these pictures were all done on location in a small two bedroom flat, with 30 of us crammed in, it was quite tight but we got it all done.

I also got the chance to use the Datavideo ripoff of the Reflect Media Chromatte system with the LED lightring and reflective screen.

The director is very pleased with the film look, as is everyone else on the shoot. The SG has been working solidly with the disk spinning more or less constantly for the last four, 10 hour days and its been fantastic.

Is that you in the 2nd picture? Whoever that is makes the sg pro/hvx + mattebox rig look pretty tiny. But maybe that's because I was just on zacuto's homepage where tiny girls wield every product known to zacuto on monstrous shoulder rigs. :)

and yeah, lets see some stills pls.

Im in the first and second pic.

Mm i dont realy have acess to the footage, as soon as the P2 card is full its whisked off and copied onto a laptop and three external RAID drives....

Is that a video transmitter on top of the HVX? If so, what kind is it? I've got one set up on mine for Steadicam use as well, and it leaves something to be desired. Wondereing what yours might be, how well it works and what it cost. Thanks.

Hi Ted,

It is a transmitter but its exclusive, as I built it myself. I was going to get a transvideo or blackbox video system but a transmitter is pretty simple electronics so i built one myself.

It works fairly well, cost £60 to make both receiver and transmitter in those cases with the power systems. Only problem is it transmits on 2.4ghz which is a fairly common frequency so interference is quite common. It never cuts off totally, it just gets the odd stripe flashing over the frame.

Hey hoarp, cool looking setup there. Parallel universes and all that weird stuff interests me - do you remember a basic synopsis of the script? It'd be cool to hear!

Good luck,

Kegan

Mine's 2.4 GHz too, and has the same kinds of inteference problems. The image quality is pretty dim too though. Passable at best. At least it was cheap - $45 on eBay plus about $10 to build a 9.6v AA battery power pack from parts at Radio Shack. When I tell directors that they'll have two monitoring choices during the time I'm shooting with the Steadicam - this, or nothing - I think it'll probably be ok : )

You should post up instructions for that somewhere. I know I couldn't build something like that...but I can follow instructions.
