Please Help Me Buy An "Indie" Audio Setup!!

you dont need 816 , this microphon particalar good for super expirience booman with good hands and super boom ( no **** from rode or vdb or eve n k-t ek )
as the microphone is super heavy with blimp and bad boom make the boom start vibrate .
also this one is super tight pattern which doesnt alow even small mistake
i have one itused only when i dont have anyother choice or want to panish the booman , and i wouldnt work good inside 9 eco from walls and low celling )
you better look for something as 416 p or t or at 4073 to replace the rode for extirials and no reverb spaces interers
but better make shure you have good hyper for places where the shot gun get hits from the walls ( glass windows , hard celling and hard floor)
about hypers , that is depends what the budget , i prefer mbho ( 604/603 with 500) to neuman 185 , not to mention you can add cardioid capsule relativly cheap for situation you need to boom over a bunch of people so the caverege would be much better ( and the ka-200 cardioid is one of my faivors to this kind of work , almost the same pattern as mkh-40)
about used mixers - shure 33 is nice start , but you can also look for audio development 260 which is exellent choice ( 4 channel ) , very quit preamps , very rubust desighn or for audio development pico slide mixers - these could be found relativly cheap as well 600-800 usd , same preamps , t or phantom power and work with external 12 v dc .
another way is to find used pd-4 dat recorder which has 3 input mixer and line outs and record direct to camera + back up on dat
adont get it wrong , there is nothing bad o record on dat is good as any other 16 bit device and the preamps on pd-4 are good enouth to make hollywood films as well ( you can find used in good shape for 1200 and less)

Man, I am dating myself, the FP33 was introduced a long time ago.

Dan
so is the cooper 106 ,20 years old sqns , sonosaxes , and even a nagra :-)
if the analog stage was desighned well it can live almost for ever
the 33 was desighn for hard field work and they quit sucseeded with as you can see these still running around , if you will open and see the desighn of the boards and facilities you will see the footprint of the sound devices in these days
not that new equip is not better in some way but not alwais or better in the way that noone really get what is the diference :-)

oleg, thank you so much for your help thus far.
i can not for the life of me find any info about this 'audio development pico slide' mixer, where can i research them?
maybe a better choice for me would be the sennheiser mkh50 for indoors, and the sennheiser 416 for outdoors? then the sennheiser g2 wireless system? thats what i'm leaning towards...
this thread is very interesting

AKG Blueline with ck 93 hyper cardioid cap $350
Audio Technica 4073a Shotgun $550
K-Tek K-Zepp
Gitzo 12' carbon fiber pole $300
K-Tek KSSM shockmount

its been a very hard choice between the schoeps cmc641 and the sennheiser mkh50. anybody have any information, horror stories, stories of love, to sway me one way or the other? i'm buying an mkh461 from oleg with a rycotte, so an indoor hyper would be the next thing on my list. someone tell me what to do!

Someone tell me what to do does not sound like the best way to begin a feature. . . but we've all been there at one time or another. Get over your fear of hiring pro's quickly. They're all just people - some great, some pure fecal matter. You can usually get rid of a bad one instantly telling him the budgets been chopped and you can't afford him. Edmonton sounds a little daunting at first but you have all those oilfield types from everywhere - you might be suprised what you might uncover with a craigslist post.

My humble suggestions -

First examine your locations - you've described some very difficult venues - even for a pro. Consider cheating. For the mall shot - film it after hours with all actors,
stocking feet, no noise or talking other than your dialog. Then get more tracks during normal business hours - sort of a super room tone - mix in post. Same for the others. Manage the noise floor like a tyrant. More work but at least you've got a prayer. Keeping your dialog shots tight w/ minimal crowd background will help. Group shots with no script are a boom ops second worst nightmare. Leave plenty of time for experimenting with different options. I know this is super basic stuff so don't take offense . .

For an indoor mic our first goto is the AKG 300b with the 93 hyper cap - only slightly more than the oktava and far less prone to handling noise in inexperienced hands. Oleg's new finds also sound interesting.

Best wishes and have fun !

Scribbles,

First of all, look at used Schoeps. I picked up a used CMC4+mk41+gvc+Collette cable for about $650. The only thing I'm really missing is a cut 1. As long as I purchase from a reputable seller, I would not hesitate to buy used equipment.
