35mm Adapter Comparison Table

the flip performance needs a bucket of testing....

if anyone wants to send me one im down to test it!

i already have an SGflip

I have never heard of DUST being a problem with the extreme. It is a TANK and you couldn't possibly have a better build quality. That should probably go off your chart. The EX is a metal beast and just as airtight etc as any other adapter. The dust problem you are reffering to is a letus trade off in models OTHER THAN the extreme.

Whenever there has been a bit of dust on the condensor or GG, it has been very very easy to remove. But now the problem is that if you get little specs, not sure how, but its happened to me now, on the inside, then you have to send it off to them and be without the adapter for a while. :(

love it though!

timur,

do you know how much the adapters weigh? Your Sgpro, how much does it weigh without the rods?

Ted

I second this request to any adapter owners, weight without rods, with/without flip unit...I couldn't find weights listed anywhere but I'd like to get that on the chart at some point.

But which one is better!?

But which one is better!?

This is great for price and all but which one is better!! we need a comparison table on the pros and cons of these adapters, can someone make that chart please!

I tried adding pros/cons at first but it was a bad idea. It's just too subjective. But if the bad news is that there are no hard and fast pros and cons - the good news is that any of these adapters will give you fantastic results. You can't really go wrong. Each of the four has quite a healthy following and you can easily read about owner experiences in this forum and on others. All of these adapters have great forums of their own.

That said, look at footage from all of the adapters and decide which you look best. There's so much footage available now that you can almost be guaranteed to find footage with any camera/adapter combo.

As the chart shows, the prices are all very competitive, so that needn't be a deciding factor. Other than that, (and the look of the image, obviously, as I mentioned) it comes down to relatively minor things like small variances in light loss, adapter weight, and design.

The Brevis35 + flip (including internal power cells and 35mm lens mount) weighs in at 2.3 pounds which makes it the lightest flipped adapter system out there. Given that our rails system is solid carbon fibre (1/2 the weight of stainless and 75% stiffer) the weight difference looks better when rails are factored in. We've abandoned stainless in favour of the much better material properties of carbon.

Jared, the Brevis35 systems ship with internal rechargeable cells, and a charger/AC adapter as standard equipment...something not reflected in your chart. I'd also suggest that light loss figures should be quoted using a 35mm lens mounted (50mm f1.4)..as our .5 to .7 stops has been quoted. If you really want to be comprhensive on light loss, you should also indicate light loss at f2.8 and f4.0 as there is a huge difference between the Brevis using CF1Le and all the others listed. It's in the order of 3 to 4 stops faster by time you get to f 5.6. This clip illustrates http://www.cinevate.com/images/lightloss.mov

The other values you've quoted simply don't reflect real world use of the adapters. Light loss is something we've obsessed over particularly with respect to CF1 and CF1Le. Leny's light loss tests are the best that exist anywhere with regard to comparative light loss between the adapters.

Another major point not reflected is that a given Brevis unit can be optimized for both large and small cameras using our interchangeable imaging elements so that both get full frame performance across the typical lens range on everything from the HV20 to the HVX200. Given the optics differences between these cameras, anyone suggesting that an adapter system can provide full frame performance without the same modularity, is not telling the whole story.

Forgive the lengthy post, but the chart and sticky means this will be read a great deal..and accuracy is important.

Cheers,
Dennis Wood

I just want to point out that the SGpro flip module bundle is $1,090

Including rods support and Nikon mount it is $1,378
sorry, but as I try to order SGpro flip module bundle is 1,278$
Including rods support and Nikon mount it is $1,675
Excluding Shipping and including VAT.
So the price is the same as Letus extreme or even a bit more.
Or I'm missing something?

I'm very interested in getting teh Letus35 Extreme, but have heard from a few people that it has issues with artifacts in low light. I know this is kind of a personal preference but, out of the four adapters which one is the all around best one?

people have died defending that question....

Read, look at footage and descide for yourself....

Thanks Tim. You use the SGpro, how do you feel about it? Is the light loss crazy? Do you use the flip module?

I've got an HV20 and was considering the 35mm adapters. I was pretty much sold on the letus extreme, it's just that i don't make much money being a college student, so it'd take me forever to save up to buy one. then i found this:

http://hv20.com/showthread.php?t=2825&highlight=diy+35mm

it's $179, which would make anyone skeptical, but the images look pretty crisp and my untrained eyes can't locate vignetting. it's an inverted image and it's a static adapter, but is that necessarily a bad thing? there are also vibrating versions sold for about $280.

other hv20 users seem to like it, but the only video or grabs i've seen were super shallow DOF, and i really want to see something wider, since nobody shoots all closeups anyway. the thing is, i could buy this and use it now, otherwise it'd be at least six months before i could afford the letus. what's the prognosis? should i do this or hold out?

Check out the HV20 on Steroid on utube www.youtube.com/wvargas and you can see footage with the HV20 and the medium format adapter on www.vimeo.com search for winston vargas, footage also on youtube.

Yeah, but it's an extra option. Just for simplicity's sake I compared each company's basic image flip package, no other extras.

I just thought I'd chime in on this, maybe it has already been cleared up, but it's not on the chart yet. But my Redrock adapter came with the hardmount kit included instead of an extra option.

I didn't even realize it at first, it took some searching on the forums on how to make a hard mount kit to realize that I already had the kit included in my bundle haha. Saved me about $10 :)

does anyone know which adapter will have the widest view, meaning you zoom in the least amount so you get more view of the picture?
I think there was one person who did a SGpro, Letus & M2 shootout and he said that the SGpro has the widest then LEX, then the M2.
any thoughts on that?

"Of course the adapter I finally picked is the one whose image I like the best, but tallying up the numbers/facts never hurts. Maybe this will help someone else out there."

well, which one did you pick. i'm leaning toward the Letus, but i would love your input.

thanks,
mike

I'm slow to act when it comes to making video purchases so while I'm fairly certain I know what adapter purchase I'll be making, I have not made it yet.

But since you asked, my personal choice for my 35mm DOF needs (narrative short films, DVX) is the SGpro. I prefer the look of the bokeh from the spinning units and the difference between SG and RR came down to ease of setup, price, and a couple other minor factors, all of which cause me to favor the SGpro. But it all depends. My mainstay is shooting weddings. I am not at a point where I care to use an adapter on a wedding shoot, but when I get to that point, the adapter I choose for that purpose would probably be the Brevis, for a completely different set of reasons.

Bear in mind my opinion is not based on my own hands-on comparisons but on the reviews and comparisons made by other testers and the fact that the look of footage from one adapter holds appeal for me that slightly edges out the competition.
