Adding Sound Effects & follies to my film

I have been adding sound effects and follies to some of the scenes in my film to beaf them up some. I have done my own follies and used the HVX to record them. Resulting in a LARGE file, needless to say, since it is a video file.

But I only need the audio part of it.

I wonder if I should not convert the video footage into a wav file by chosing "render as .wav" and then use the wav file and blow off the mxf file, since I don't use the video part of it, only the audio. It would save me hard drive space.

I know this is the long way to go about it, but my recording studio was down (card died) and meanwhile I wanted to keep progressing. I have been very happy with the sound quality I got out of this arrangement though, the 416 Sennheiser shot gun did a fine job at recording all the sounds. Probably better than my extra sensitive voice mic or any other mics I have in my recording studio for that matter...

Anywhoo, any suggestions?

I do this sometimes when I use my DVX as a field recorder. I just bring them into Vegas and render out as .wav files named appropriately. Go for it.

Do you mean "foley"? :)

You don't actually have to render anything --- all you have to do is convert the MXFs in the P2 card's Audio folder to .wavs using RayMaker. Then bring them into your timeline.

Then, if you want, you can discard everything else.

I also used the HVX as a recorder to get some foley while on location. I just put the MXF on the timeline, then rendered the audio to a new clip (which saves it as a .wav).
