You know you're a filmmaker when...

[Insert "Golden Globes" joke here]

Is that P-titty? Or the udder guy?

- When you hold auditions to find a girlfriend.

- When, while watching a film, you walk to the projection booth to ask if you can see that scene again.

- When making love you call in a body double.

- When you provide an audio commentary to everything you do.

- When you see someone on vacation, videotaping their family, and you take their camera away and say, "Amateurs! Ok, one more time... This time with some emotion!"

- When you're about to have sex you yell, "Action!" and then a few minutes later say, "Ok, people. That's a wrap!"

When you walk outside on a beautiful day and realize that reality needs color correcting.

When you see video of your nephew speaking his first words, notice multiple shadows and wonder who the hell lit this?

When you watch the countdown leader at the head of a movie, and murmur "beep" to yourself, at the appropriate moment.

When you hear swelling emotive music while standing atop the Empire State Building, balancing on the prow of a cruise ship under way, or seeing friends or family off at the airport.

These are great.

When you hear a good, slow song and start to picture a heartfelt dramatic scene unfolding with the people around you; or even when you're by yourself.
(Yes, I actually do this...:embarasse)

when you see a wartime piece of live nightime coverage in CNN and you think about how that could have looked a lot better with proper lighting.

When you see G W Bush and think "Who the hell cast this guy?"

Whenever you see a chopper you hum "Ride of the Valkiries"

Whenever you go to a Theather and you look at the red curtains, you expect a giant and a midget to come in, talking backwards

people say "America's Funniest Home VIdeos", and you say "Cinema Verité"

you watch the Oscars actually interested in the Best Short Film and Docummentary categories

You go watch Cloverfield, your girfriend turns to you and says "The motion is making me sick"and you reply "What the hell are you talking about? This was shot with the HVX!"

You know you are a filmmaker when....

... the check for your first paying gig clears.

... someone you do not know comes up to you and says, "I love that movie you did".

...when you feel the fear and do it anyway.

Weirdly enough I once worked a feature with someone who was a great proponent of that book.

When you look at big-ticket consumer items and calculate their value in terms of tape stock, render boxes, workstations, printers, etc, rather than dollars.
