Price for a commercial

I recently shot and plan on editing a commercial for a banquet hall/dance club/bar. The coowner is the cousin of one of my friends and they have had previous commercials shot & edited before and the person shooting & editing them did not charge. I made it clear to my coworker that I am looking to get paid for my services. He did a very poor job of communicating with me about what exactly they are looking for and never told the people who own the bar about me getting paid.

When I went there, it was very unorganized and they didn't really know what they wanted and offered very little direction. I asked about pay and he seemed a little confused & stunned that he would have to pay. We agreed that I'd shoot the stuff and see how extensive it was and give them a number later on.

I'm thinking $500.00 for it shot & edited and would probably go as low as $400.00. They all have money but from what the old videographer/editor said, they are kind of cheap and are looking to get stuff for cheap. He was real uncomfortable about his situation.

How much would guys charge for a commercial to shoot & edit.

Run away. You're already lowballing yourself. $500 for a shot and edited commercial? Pft, are you kidding mang?

If they have money but are cheap, they're going to be the worst kind of clients. How long is the commercial? Don't sell yourself short. I wouldn't shoot a commercial for under $1200 and that depends on setups etc.

Yea, this could be a bad situation. Remember the most important thing you have in this business is your reputation. These kind of things can go bad quick. Wrap it up, try to cover hard costs and walk away.

Don't ever let someone else negotiate or even communicate your terms. Do it in writing and GET A DEPOSIT BEFORE YOU EVEN CHARGE YOUR BATTERIES TO SHOOT.
