New Geardear backfocus lock

Hi,

About a month ago I emailed Gerhard at geardear about producing a new product for us adapter uses. I said now easy it was to knock the back focus out and everyone had to put tape on their cameras. I sent him over a basic design which he refined and the finished article arrived this morning

It really is rather good, locks the ring absolutly tight, no play at all. The Y shaped lock can slide from side to side to grip the ring fully and its quite neat. It also addds extra support to the camera.

Heres some photos:

Gerhard mentioned 35euros. Not sure when he plans on putting it on the site, I think I have the only one at the moment.

But gaffe tape works so well. What are the 'pros' of using this device exactly?

Well you don't have to get gaffatape all over your camera, which looks more professional to clients. I reckon it works better than gaffatape, or at least It does on my setup, it provides support for the camera as well. It is very easy to set up, once the camera is focused you just push the lock up to the ring and it stays there, if you need to adjust it its very quick and easy.

Carry on using tape if you want, this is just a cleaner neater and more professional solution.

Does it interfere with a follow focus and mattebox setup? =B

35 Euros is a lot for something you can do with Gaffers. But, ever since Lenny discovered the edge sharpness thing I don't lock my focus down anymore.

Looks cool, just not sure about the practicality.

Dosnt interfere with anything it just slides onto the rails like any other rail accessory would...

35 Euros seems about right for sth individually produced and probably sold in very low numbers...
And nothing keeps one from making it yourself...

What is this edge sharpness thing to which you refer?

Basically instead of center focusing your HVX on the ground glass, you find the center, then edge it til the sides become sharp as well. It's a compromise.

You may not have that issue with the A1, honestly. That sucker seems as edge-to-edge as edge-to-edge can get with the Letus Ex.

Between the cable ties, D4 to Component cables, velcro here and there, monitor hoods, brackets for this and that, tape on the mattebox to label filters and paper tape for lens flare, I don't think a client would hold a 1" by 1" piece of gaffers against you let alone notice. Also, between the mattebox rod bracket, monitor bracket (for those o us who mount a marshall with extension arms), follow focus, and hand held grips, that leaves very little room to stick something else on the rods.

What can I say, I think it's overkill.
