Recovering Footage from Damaged Tape

I have a MiniDV tape with lots of artifacting/glitches during the first 20 minutes, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any possibility of getting the tape cleaned and possibly recovering some of the damaged footage. I'm willing to try just about anything, given the importance of the footage.

yeah, it's definitely a tape issue. i've tried capturing on several different cameras/decks.

i have no idea if it's possible to clean a tape that's dirty, or if it's something beyond that, like something digitally that's messed up in the tape, in which case i'm assuming i'm out of luck.
 
the tape was playing fine ? maybe the first 20 minutes is in a different format, like dvcam ?

I had the same issue a while back, got the camera totally cleaned and then only played the tape back once, on another deck. Sucks, but it happens.

it's definitely all in the same format, and not a deck issue. so i'm just wondering if anyone here can say definitively if it is or isn't possible to get the actual tape cleaned....to deal physically w/the actul tape to try to recover some of the footage. i've never heard of this happening, but i won't rule it out (really hoping to salvage this footage) until i hear some definitive "no"s.
