It's Official, yet it worries me, The Director is a nobody (literally), and the few projects of his i've seen (all shorts) don't impress me. So why pick a nobody to direct a remake of probably the greatest sci-fi, cyberpunk films of all time?
Lots of dirty fingers in this pie including Leonardo Dicaprio, the only saving grace I see is that Katsuhiro Otomo is going to be involved, and interestingly enough it will be 2 films the first one slated for 2009. Supposedly this will be truer to the manga than the original anime.

I found the directors website (link below) and while he seems like a funny, decent guy everything about him screams inexperience.

(got to admit I did like The Silent City, with the guy from Red Eye)

What do you guys think? Blasphemy, hate, hope......

Way to open your mouth and stick your foot in it.

The director is actually a member here on the board!

I think RUAIRI ROBINSON is VASTLY talented, as evidenced by his short films on his site.

Evidently Hollywood thinks so too.

What exactly have you done?

Yup. Considering that Ruairi worked on that short (Silent City) almost entirely by himself for about a year... = huge kudos!! He really created some amazing special effects.

He has also been nominated for an Oscar before (Fifty Percent Grey).
Cut the dude some slack!

Mike

Did I say anything bad about him? Most of what i see is direction of animation, he has never done a feature film, live action or otherwise am I wrong! I'm glad you see VASTLY talented in that, and more power to him if he can.
But Inexperience is a fact, not an insult; and he is a nobody director in feature films.
I have every right for my doubts in his ability to pull of such an important project.
I find it interesting mcgeedigital that you take such offense in my observations, as for the foot you speak of I have a few places in mind where you can stick yours smart guy.
As for this film time will tell, and I still remain doubtful.

Ha, ha you must have been posting as i was writing.
I did say in my original post that I liked Silent City, fifty percent gray didn't impress me however, or his other short. Though there was a definite rise in skill from one short to the next. I don't see how he could be picked for such an important film.
Of course I hope to be proved wrong other than right, nobody wants to see these films shame the original.
If Ruairi is a member on this board, Hopefully he can update us on how the films are progressing, and reassure us that it is not all for naught.

whatever his experience level he obviously has the chops to get the greenlight for not one BUT TWO movies. there's no way they would hand this story over to someone that doesn't have the skills to pull this off.

so what if he doesn't have feature experience? if his shorter work, done alone, shows his talent, then doesn't adding a team below him give him the ability to do longer work? i'm just saying, don't discount someone completely because they haven't directed a feature.

all things aside, this is one my favorite animated features. i can't wait to see how that vision is translated onto the screen (twice!)

Not picking on you but you did write this right?

What does it take to impress you? Nothing on this site I guess because his Oscar worthy material obviously doesn't.

Sorry... I just disagree with you. No big deal.
Nothing personal, just my opinion.

Like I said I hope I'm wrong, I've seen to many disappointing remakes to be so optomistic. That being said I would also like to see it succeed!

What does it take to impress me? nothing short of awesome which is exactly what the original was.
And you are wrong about me, if I didn't see anything on this site that impressed me I wouldn't still be here.
Fifty percent gray didn't get an oscar; not that I care, but that institution doesn't impress me either. Very few people and films that truly deserve one don't and are not even nominated.

Not to pick on you either, but you should know better!

There's been a big surge in first time directors the last couple years in Hollywood. The thought being that as long as they pair the director with a well qualified and experienced crew, AD, and DP, the director can lean on them when needed.

It's been paying off, and it seems they'll continue until it stops paying off.

And for the record, I didn't see mcgeedigital "take such offense" to anything you wrote... but I'm with him and sticking up for any member of the forums. Preferably without rudely being told to stick my foot in my arse.

I just find it funny when people come on here and don't have faith in a guy who was been nominated for an Oscar at a very young age. The same guy who did all the special effects in a movie (Silent City) that blows away just about everything we've seen on here. It's not like he had a team working on the special effects for that movie. He did it entirely by himself! That movie (and his pitch to do Akira) is what got him the job.

Well done I say.

Let's try giving him a chance first shall we?

I don't want to say I told you so,.... but you may want to check the credits on that one,(Silent City) I see other names also.
WB has had the rights for the movie adaption for years!

Well silent city didn't have anything. a waste of good talent. its slow and nothing happens and its beautiful... I mean its a short and had good visual and shot well and had one great actor who talent was not even shown.. Cillian Murphy my god he's been in 28 days later batman begins and sunshine and you just let him go "boom". I love Akira and hope for the best result out there, hell kanye west "stronger" video had a nice visual lifted from Akira. as long as he does the script justice and has good actors (I heard Joseph Gordon Leviett is attached as Tetsuo character) then I will be ok but till we know whats happening I'm gonna be resistant.

Don't think I told him to put his foot in his arse... but if the shoe fits. (Incidently he told me to put my foot in my mouth as well as other nasty insults) Also I don't see you sticking up for me, being that I was the first one assaulted for my opinion!
BTW what is there to stick up for, I said nothing bad about Ruiari in the first place, from what I've seen of him he is "inexperienced" and he is a "nobody" director, those are just facts.
Does that mean I would rather have some "big hollywood douche" make the film like Michael Bay.... Hell No!
Look at it from my perspective and the perspective of anyone who loves the original, "Who is this guy? WB must have no great expectations for the film other than making a film they have already paid the rights for"
I have said before I hope he proves me wrong, and we will see as this film draws closer.
You guys need to chill out, attacking me for not being on the Ruiari bandwagon is just sad.

I hear you spidey I had to do a double take to even notice that Cillian Murphy was even in it. I thought it was a look alike till I saw the credits and I wondered why he wasn't utilized.

Notice the term Special Effects!??

Check the thread man... AND the credits. He is the only one credited with Editing & Visual Effects, as I said in my post that you tried to twist around.
At least try to get your facts straight.

Obviously you have something against him so I'll leave you to it.

Jealousy seems to run deep for some people. Why not be happy for him??

I just don't get it.

Cheers,

Mike

I have a feeling Ruiari will do wonderful things with Akira. And I hope the studio lets him. I still get a kick out of Silent City. I have the exact same downhill mountain bike jacket as the soldiers are wearing. It's also in either Ultra Violet or Aeon Flux. I won't remember which.
