Making FCP faster with 8-core? Please help

I'm a novice with macs i'm afraid, i've got an 8-core mac pro, tiger, 5 gig ram. Trouble is programs seem to doodle along without using all 8-cores and a little ram?

I've worked out by using qmaster settings how to get compressor to use more cores, but even with this it only uses 1gig of ram from the 5gigs i've got, spread across the 6 cores i allocated to it.

Is it possible to give the computer more commonsense and harness more ram in compressor?

Do i need to fiddle with settings to make the computer use more cores with, After Effects, Lightwave, FCP etc.?

cpu is at about 80% used when compressor is working with 6 cores, set up with qmaster. Do you know how to set up after effects to hardness all cores?
