HD editing with Black Magic Intensity Pro?

Is it possible to edit HD footage in Premiere CS3 and see the footage playback in real time on an external monitor?

We just upgraded our Windows XP system. It now has an Intel Core 2 Dual 3ghz processor and 2gig of RAM. The Black Magic Intensity Pro card allows us to output video our HD monitor.

For Black Magic standard definition projects, this works fine. For our HD projects, we can only get the video to play for about 1 second before it hangs, even after we render the files on the Premiere timeline.

Any ideas?

i would check and make sure you can at least stream something to the HD monitor, desktop, dvd movie driven by PC, something.

and we are talking about a monitor or are you talking about a LCD TV with 1080i or 1080P.

i believe black magic is meant for high definition tv output via the hdmi and is meant to stream your final product to the tv for a review of the finished product.
definitely make sure your tv resolution is set to the output of the push from your PC, unlike LCD computer monitors, high definition tv's may not have the internal ability to switch resolution on the fly.

finally email their support and be specific with what you have plugged in, i.e. model and type of monitor, computer specs, hdmi or component input.

this card isn't that cheap and the company seems to have good support.

hope i helped

Hi,

The short answer is yes; why yours isn't working is worrisome.

I would certainly double check all the project settings to ensure that all the settings are correct for the project - that the CODECs are matched to the files and such, and if everything is as it should be, give support a call.

I've had the exact same problem for a year now. It'll intensity will play back DV footage but only blips of HD, no matter what I try.

My guess is that it may have something to do with the video card hooked up to the computer. I have a amd 6000+ with 4 gigs of pc 800 and raptor hardrives but have an old 7300 nvidia card. It seems like video card might work with intensity as far as preview displays.

Of course I may be completly wrong but I've spend hours trying to figure it out and thats my best guess. I'm getting a new video card soon so i guess I'll know then.

Someone on another board suggested I try setting up a motion-JPEG project instead of a 8 bit YUV.

It works!

Essentially, I'm not altering the original footage, but the internal renders and video output are compressed using motion-JPEG.

I did have to customize the template to make it 1280x720 square and progressive.

So this is great for editing my animation (motion-JPEG might not look so good with live action -- I haven't tested that yet). When it comes time to export a file, I will change my video output settings to 8 bit YUV and do the pre-render again. It won't play in realtime, but I won't need it to at that point.

HI

Dont know if this applies to anyone here, but Black Magic wrote me and made mention that they are working on support for RT playback of P2 MXF video, in the Intensity line, fairly soon. I wrote and made mention that I wanted to avoid having to re-render P2 footage to their own codec for RT playback. They suggested I wait before purchasing the Intensity for a little while because the ENG's were working on a version that would support native RT Playback of P2 footage due to demand. They made no promise or official target date for release. However, they did say to check back in just a few weeks??

That would be really cool if they support P2 in Premiere natively. It would end a lot of monitoring issues for a lot of PProCS3/P2 users.

The support staff at Black Magic are great but I still cannot solve my problem of outputting my footage to a Sony Productions Monitor (PML20) I am on a Mac and the footage looks fine on my Cinema display hooked up to the Mac but I cannot get a signal on the Sony. The sony has S-Video inputs and Composite BNC inputs.

Here is my cabling setup:
Computer, Black Magic Intensity Pro card, their breakout cable. Using two RCA outputs on the breakout cable. Bought S-Video to RCA Y cable by Hosa. All the monitor says is NO SYNC. I plugged in the Canon A-1 into the Sony directly to check if the monitor was ok and I did indeed get live picture albeit in B&W since I was only using a single cable. These are links to the cable and links to the diagram for Black Magic S-Video suggested hookup.

just a note, but you can get a matrox parhelia or similar card for realtime external HD monitoring up to 1080p via component output from any video overlay compliant program (including CS3, PPRo , AE, PS, and Encore, ect of course), for cheaper than a decklink. it just seema like an easier choice because realtime 1080p MXf files works great straight through CS3 without any additional hardware. if naitive RT external monitoring is the only concern , I would go with a less expensive solution. if you need RT performance under any conditions, i would go with something like the matrox solution that supports RT mxf playback with multiple effects and layers as well as external monitoring.

Had this problem for ages also you can't have a 720 project with a time base of 25p it just gets angry. Black magic were not very helpful at all but did say they
were working on support for MXF in prem, so i just went back to using the second
as a preview, i got a matrox dual head to go so i could still have two monitors plus my apple cinema display as the preview montior

Any updates to how this is working out? I'm needing a monitoring solution for a large client monitor and the intensity pro sounds like a perfect solution for cheap. Is anyone successfully monitoring with one in PP 3.1 with mxf files in all resolutions and frame rates? I'm seeing conflicting reports, but many are older before the 3.1 update. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Neil, does the Parhelia support RT monitoring of all flavors of P2 DVCPro HD? 1080i/p? 24pA? 720p 12to60fps? and what type of outputs are there? HDMI? DVI?

I am now looking for the same solution. Are there any updates on this? I need something that will let me playback 720/24pN and 1080/24pA projects to a third display (a plasma) for monitory. I currently have an ATI card with 2 30" cinema displays, but have to disconnect one and connect the plasma via a DVI-HDMI cable. One option is for me to purchase a 2nd ATI card. What's the best solution?

Parhelia Apve supports but i have sony 1024&768 HDTV ,i connect wia component output to component to HDMI converter and go through in to tv with HDMI,My HDTV, when ever i open 720 or 1080 project tv recognize the signal but the picture looks not even like dv :( still could'nt solve the problem....

To get 2 layers of uncompressed SD would require at least two hard drives striped. Uncompressed HD requires 4 just for 1 layer. I am not sure what codec and compresson ratio is being used with the capture card?

I'm using a Matrox Parhelia APVe, and am pretty happy with it.
I can view MXF based HD projects from the timeline in CS3 out to a component HD monitor just fine. In fact, I'm getting better performance then with Ppro 2 w/ Cineform or Raylight. I've also used an Nvidia card in the past to do the same thing, though it was giving me trouble with Cineform so I swtiched over.

I use the same Matrox setup to preview Aftereffects to the production monitor, and it comes with plugins for Photoshop and 3DSmax, but I haven't needed them yet. There might be an announcement at NAB about another product from a rival company that would significantly improve the workflow at a reasonable price. Can't say any more at this time.

tomk358;

I think we are excatlly using the same settings to preview the timeline on an extra monitor. But i wonder if your footage on the external monitor is really like what you see on the premier monitor?Which external monitor you are using? Is it pro full Hd monitor?Mine is just a HD ready tv(hdtv) which is 1024x768!And my footage looks terrible on my tv(which i am using for monitor).Ok i am not expecting a nice hd looking but it also looks worst than a DV footage.Cause i tried it with a SD project with a DV footage,it seems ok.

Best

Hi Tom, where do you tell prem to view the output how do you set the Matrox up for playback ?

Decided to start a new thread instead of trying to wake this thread up... the last post was March of 2008?
Look for "Current State of Real Time Monitoring in CS5" Please
Thanks
