Hi guys, i'm wondering if anyone has seen this problem before in FCP? I'm thinking it's most likely a hardware problem than a software or settings issue.

I just received a 30 second uncompressed avi file which I imported into a new project. It plays fine but at the very end it does something weird as depicted in the picture below.

I'm working on a mac pro 2.8, a single 500gb harddrive (temporarily set as my scratchdisk as well), nividia gt 8800, and 2gb ram.

The avi item properties are as follows: file size 38mb, 29.97 fps, 720x486, compressor = cinepak (medium setting), 24-bit color, avg data rate = 1318k/sec

Could it be that I need a separate faster hd setup (raid) for data and scratchdisk? Or is this some other issue? Thanks in advance.

i doubt it's your computer. it looks like a compression error in the source file. how does it play in Quicktime?

thanks for the reply.

played it on quicktime and it was fine. oddly enough in the finder view the preview icon looks the same way, but when you press space bar it plays fine.

One thing you might try ... FCP is not nuts about AVI. It likes .mov.

Open the file in Qt, save as a QT movie or export as and then import the QT file into FCP and see if that works mo' betta.

I'll try that suggestion. One question though... will I be losing any quality by resaving it in another format?

It's surprising though that FCP has issues with avi files, cause uncompressed avi seems to be the industry standard no? Anyhow thank you again for the suggestion and I'll keep you guys updated.

AVI is just a wrapper that can contain a multitude of codecs (same w/MOV). A codec like Animation produces large, but very high quality and cross-platform files.

Resaving the file may or may solve the problem depending on if the source file has a compression error in it or if FCP is just having problems w/the cinepak codec. If you resave it as a Uncompressed (or ProRes if you have FCP6) then any real world image loss should be pretty much "invisible".

sweet. thanks for the info. I just upgraded to FCP 6 so i'll look into ProRes and Animation codec.

this is good. We seem to be getting closer to narrowing down the problem. I guess I should look into the cinepak codec to see if anyone else has similar issues.

Thank you guys much.
