curious if anyone has been to any of these festivals -- either as an audience member or as a filmmaker representing a feature or short film...

Avignon Film Festival
Woodstock Film Festival
Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIFF)
Moondance International Film Festival
Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival
Starz Denver Film Festival
HollyShorts Film Festival
Sacramento Film and Music Festival
Now Film Festival (Partnered w/ MySpace & YouTube)

i've personally never been to any of them, but would love to hear some of your experiences.

I haven't been to any of those festivals, but if you join Withoutabox, you can search the messageboards for comments and experiences. That's what I usually do when I'm deciding whether or not to submit to a certain fest.

yeah, i'm already on withoutabox... i just don't "know" anyone on their message boards and i trust the opinions here more.

Zak, I had a short in Moondance a few years ago. It's in a beautiful location next to the Flatirons in Boulder. The fest itself was pretty small. They call themselves "The American Cannes." I think that is really stretching it.

Although I met some really cool filmmakers, the attendance was pretty weak. There was a big theater next door, but the screenings were held in a lodge with a portable screen and chairs. There was definitely a strong art house vibe. I believe Moondance was originally created to promote women in film, so, the programming leans a little in that direction. If anything, go to meet some cool peers and visit the Rockies.

I will say, having just returned from screening at Festivus in Denver, the experience was night and day. Festivus was an amazing time, and I was very impressed with the programmers and films. This one should be on your list for next year.

I think I was at the Sacramento FF awhile back... I saw a movie or two and some shorts, met a few people, etc. I was at an old theatre on K street (I think that was the name of the walking street, or is it J) right in downtown. Felt kind of small, coulda been that particular night. I did meet some interesting filmmakers. I think I saw Mad Hot Ballroom there and a few other things. That's about all I can say about it, sorry.
