FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELP!!! HD Vegas Rendering!!!

Ok. First of all - treat me like a 10 year old when explaining this to me.
I am an award winning filmmaker who has decided to make the move to HD. Bought myself a nice Hvx200 and 2 16gb P2cards.

I do all my editing on Vegas 7.

SO here's the problem.

Through my numerous competition wins and festival awards, I have FINALLY landed a real actual paying job to do a national commercial. I shot the whole film at HDV 720, and finished editing. I was called by the company who says they want the final commercial on DigiBeta.

Now... I am new to the whole HD rendering process. What steps should I take to Get the MOST BEAUTIFUL HD quality I can AND still be sent to someone who can transfer it to DigiBeta.

What I REALLY need is a nice step-by-step for the rendering process in Vegas 7.

* Do I need to download any codex?
* What options should I select before rendering it?
* Should I 'print to tape', or "print to HDV tape"
... should i not print to any tapes at all???

All i did so far was select "Print to Tape" and the quality was far less than the mindblowing originals. HELP!!!!

I'm so dam confused with HD, I don't know where to begin...

Someone out there rocks... help me impress these people so I can get myself another job :P hahahaha

I'm ready to download or buy whatever i need to make my final product as beautiful as possible!

Thanks SOOOO much.

You need to export twice. You can't do both your master which is supposed to be an intermediate codec, and the "viewing" version that it's supposed to be a delivery codec to be the same. Different codecs for different jobs: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/10/19/understanding-intermediate-and-delivery-video-formats/

So, for best compatibility for the viewing export use:
WMV or h.264 at 1280x720, progressive, 29.97 or 23.976 frames depending how you shot, and about 10 mbps of bitrate.

For the intermediate 'master' version use the Cineform codec, or uncompressed. Same frame rate and resolution as above, as for progressive vs interlaced it depends how you shot.

ok Cool thanks... but I'm still a bit confused on delivery to get it transfered to DigiBeta. Will I render this as a file and bring in VIA a storage device to them? Or Will I send it to a HDV Mini DV Tape? Which will be the best as far as picture quality?

Thank for you help really!

Jack

Also what is the benifit of both a master version and a 'viweing' version. What are they for? Sorry, I'm really not familar with these terms because I've never worked with industry professional before.

Thank you again!

Why woud he render to HD when he's delivering SD? At some point you're gonna need to downconvert to SD, usually the later you do it the better. Once you've got it to SD, take the hard drive to a post house and let them dub it to digibeta.

Btw, how were you able to shoot HDV with an HVX200? I don't think it can do that.

Do they want the commercial in HD or SD?

The best thing you can do is ask the post house, where they're going to be doing the transfer to DigiBeta, what they need. They may want an uncompressed AVI or Quicktime.

I shot the whole film at 1280x720

here is the original low def commercial:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=DfOv-4LhyJk

but the wanted it re-shot in highdef.

So I did that already. isn't 1280x720 considered HD?

The original footage when I checked the dailies looked awesome, but when i transfered it to tape... it's looked... well... less than awesome...

so
I'm not sure what i need to do to render it just as awesome as the original, and still be able to get it changed over to digibeta.

thanks

Brianluce...

what i ment was transfering it to a hdv tape throught Vegas. When you select "print to HDV tape" - kind of going through Vegas first. sorry to confuse! :)

If you've been asked to deliver DigiBeta, you've been asked to deliver SD, not HD. That doesn't mean you shouldn't edit in the Vegas 1280x720 HD parameters for the purposes of your Vegas project (.VEG). It is the output format for delivery that you're worried about.

This would be the same for DVCPro50. That's a higher-quality SD system that delivers 4:2:2 at 50 Mbit/s (double standard DV). It is very common, and some argue that it's perhaps even better than DigiBeta (despite the higher 90 Mbit/s). Moot point, really. If they want DigiBeta, that's what you're going to give them!

Did you edit this as a 720 24PN project - 1280 x 720, progressive, (23.976)?

A transfer house may still want a 720p master, though. Gotta deliver what they want for the transfer. Ask!

In my experience, taking DVCPRO HD and then printing from Vegas to HDV tape isn't a great recipe, especially in the reds.
