Unable to capture SD Video with Vegas 8

I just lost over an hour of precious time, trying to cut a video for my wife's event tomorrow. So ticked off right now, I can't even stand it.

I've had to open Vegas 6 to capture the footage, as I even used to have this problem with Vegas 7 (wouldn't capture). All my settings seem correct, but now Vegas 8 is giving me the same BS problem.

Ideas?

Vegas 7 also wouldn't export uncompressed AVI's with the audio (even though settings were correct). Haven't tried it with Vegas 8 yet, but at this rate I'm guessing it'll be a problem for that as well.

Sorry that your having such problems. In order to help you out...we need more information about you rig. Number of drives, PC or running on a Intel bootcamp mac? What setting did you put in your preference file. You might copy the exact setting you have in Vegas 6 and do it to version 8 and see if that solves the problem. Might just be a bad firewire cable. Also do you have more than one copy of Vegas in your computer? Might be a conflict there. I prefer to ditch all old copies and only have the latest version in my computer.

The settings I have in Vegas 6, are default, so they should be the same in 7 & 8. Only in 7 & 8, when starting capture, it asks if you're wanting to capture SD or HDV. I choose SD, and get no results ... perhaps I should try HDV instead?

As far as my system, it's an older AMD64 3200+, 2GB DDRAM, etc.

It can NOT be the firewire cable, in my opinion, since it works just fine with Vegas 6.

David, no errors, just no results. While the tape location number is running it's normal pace, and the footage is playing, the capture duration just sits at zero, and never starts the clock/timecode. So when I stop the playback/record, unlike in Vegas 6 that then processes the footage, tells me how many clips were captured, dropped frames (if any), etc., Vegas 7 & 8 do nothing, since it never captured anything to process.

Just tried -- didn't have a problem capturing.

Vegas 6, 7, and 8 all use the same VidCap program for DV, so I'm not sure what would cause this behavior.

I thought you were only shooting SD. What camera are you using? You would only need to capture in HDV if you shot in HDV format. If HDV you need to downconvert to DV. This is from the help section in vegas 8. Don't know if it applys to you but it's a good think to know.

Capturing HDV Clips

If you have an HDV camera, you can use Vegas software to capture your clips as MPEG-2 transport streams.

If you will be delivering your project in standard definition (SD) via DVD or DV tape, you can use the camera's built-in DV downconversion (if available) to convert your HDV video to the DV format. Use the camera's Options menu to set the camera to output DV, and you can capture and edit video in the same way that you normally use DV in Vegas projects with no need for intermediate files.
  1. Enable the Sony Video Capture application:
a. From the Options menu, choose Preferences.
b. Click the Video tab.
c. Clear the Use external video capture application check box.
d. Click the OK button.
  1. <LI class=kadov-p>From the File menu, choose Capture Video (or click the Capture Video button
    b_vidcap.gif
in the Project Media window) to start the Sony Video Capture application.
  2. Configure your HDV device in Video Capture:
a. Click the
b_properties.gif
button in the Capture window to open the Capture Preferences dialog.
b. Click the Device tab.
c. From the Device type drop-down list, choose IEEE 1394/MPEG2-TS Device.
d. From the Device drop-down list, choose your HDV camera.
  1. Capture your clip:
a. Use the transport controls below the Video Preview window to cue your tape.
b. Click the Start Capture button
record.gif
to start capturing.
c. Press the Play button on your camcorder.
d. Click the Stop button
b_stop.gif
(or press Esc) to end the capture procedure.

Your clip is saved to the folder specified on the Disk Management tab of the Capture Preferences dialog. This path is displayed in the Capture Folder box in the Video Capture window.

Select the Enable HDV scene detection check box on the General tab of the Capture Preferences dialog if you want to create multiple files if scene changes are detected. When the check box is cleared, HDV clips will be captured to a single file.
  1. If you plan to edit the HDV clips (transport streams), you're ready to start editing on the timeline.

If you plan to edit intermediate files on the timeline, you can convert your captured clips to an intermediate format.

Thanks guys. For now, I can just capture in Vegas 6, but pretty soon I'll probably need to take the time to contact Sony support, and see if they can walk me through via phone, or whatnot.

Thanks again.

Oh, and I'm just uploading with a standard miniDV camcorder, even though most of the stuff is shot with a DVX100a.

iv had capture problems before...re-install your firewire( IEEE 1394) driver ---- uninstall the driver and then have windows re-install it. it might solve your problem.
