Your Picks For Best Film - OSCARS!

Atonement is a weird movie. I don't know if it equals the sum of its parts, but I can't get it out of my head.

Question to NO COUNTRY viewers. I assumed I walked in at the first scene, which was the scene when Anton stops the guy in the car and kills him with the hydrogen pump thingy. But some people are talking about things that I don't remember. Were there scenes before this? If so, can someone tell me what happened at the beginning of the movie?

What??

Yah... you missed quite a bit. Go see it again. Having someone tell you won't do it justice.

No Country For Men is the best film I have seen in the last 5 years easy. The first time I saw it I could possibly agree about the 3rd act not being up to the 1st and 2nd, but watching it the second time around I think the 3rd act is outstanding and at least as good or better than the first two acts. However, TWBB was amazing and would win almost any other year so there could be an upset.

5 Years ?

Still can't beleive Eddie Vedder (Into The Wild) wasn't nominated for orignial song yet Enchanted gets 3 noms.....

5 Years ?

Unless I'm forgetting something. At least the best film I've seen in theaters over the last 5 years (I'll leave a little room just incase there's a DVD of an older film that I've seen in those 5 years that might have been better)

Good gracious. You missed the introduction of the protagonist, the antagonist, the setup for why the antagonist is set on his mission, the reason the protagonist is on the run, his family scenario, and the setup for the sheriff.

In other words, you missed the entire premise of the movie.

Hmmm. No doubt an incredible film, one of the best I've seen in cinema ..

I'd have to sit hard and think about this equation; but films that come to mind released in the last 5 years.

The Aviator
Gangs of New York
The Departed
Munich
Sideways
Children of Men
Michael Clayton

I'm not syaing every one of those is better, but man it is close.

I've watched all of those films (and most of them recently) and for me personally No Country takes the cake, I'd even venture to say that I like There Will Be Blood more than all of those as well (with Gangs and Clayton closely behind)

No Country and Juno are the only films I've seen on the list. Juno I loved but it can't win Best Pictures over what its up against. No Country was great and its ending wasn't "bad" it just wasn't what I wanted. When I went to read about reviews the main thing that people said after the "bad ending" rant was that the Coen's were faithful to the book. The didn't change the ending to something they knew would satisfy everyone, which I respect. I understood the ending a 2nd time around anyways, I think its just that most people wanted some big ol thing to happen.

Regardless, No Country for me...

Don't forget Million Dollar Baby

At least... I really liked that one.

I would be happy if There Will Be Blood or No Country For Old Men won. I thought they were both fantastic.

I didn't really think Michael Clayton was so hot, except for Tom Wilkinson's inspired performance.

As far as Juno goes, I would've walked out if I wasn't with my wife's parents, who incidentally liked it. It was like a sitcom, with all of the over-the-top witty banter except for "serious" moments. I am astonished it is up for an Academy Award.

Never saw Atonement.

It was like a sitcom

I enjoyed the film, but I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking the dialogue was very sitcom-ish. It seemed like every line was a punch line or some sarcastic remark especially the convenient store scene, the only thing that was missing in that scene was the laugh track.

I wonder if more people would like this movie if it wasn't for that opening scene. It is way too clever. And there is no exposition that isn't covered somewhere else.

this was the best year for great movies i can remember...ever.

i think in lesser years into the wild, zodiac, eastern promises, american gangster, and before the devil knows your dead all would have been best picture material.

but i'm still a little bitter juno got the nod before any of those.

Scorsese fan? :)

I saw Departed and own Aviator, but neither hold a candle to the best of this year. Aviator was epic but Dicaprio just couldn't pull off the role in my view. Departed was pretty cliche, and hard language doesn't make a movie. I walked out of Departed feeling cheated. I walked out of TWBB and NCFOM saying WOW. That was special.

Saw Atonement tonight. I can see why it got the nominations. Well crafted film, but against some very stiff competition. Didn't see Juno, or M. Clayton.

I don't understand how anyone can even mention Michael Clayton alongside There Will Be Blood or No Country for Old Men. Its a pretty conventional thriller and not that unique of a setup. It felt alot like The Constant Gardener or Syriana....people just happen to like it because it has a better payoff.

For me There Will Be Blood is the best this year....with No Country right behind it. I think No Country will win though because most critics prefer it and the Cohens are due.
