Your Picks For Best Film - OSCARS!

This thread is being started for one reason. So you can come back and gloat after picking the winner!

It's interesting because all 5 films have major weaknesses. The strongest film from beginning to end is probably Juno. Surprisingly, the film that stayed with me the longest is Atonement - though that's mainly because the ending was such a surprise. No Country would've won hands down if it weren't for the disastrous ending. And Michael Maguire or whatever the hell that Clooney movie was isn't even in the conversation.

That leaves... THERE WILL BE BLOOD as the winner!

i thought Juno was a joke. I walked out.

the other four films were all perfect. michael clayton not quite holding its own with the other three but...

i will be happy if either no country, atonement, or there will be blood win.

i hope there will be blood wins though.

Juno: Still haven't seen it. Although I've heard good things, I'm definitely waiting for the DVD, the whole 'hipper-than-thou' sounding dialouge from the trailer was both annoying and cringe inducing. I'm hoping it doesn't win, just since it has annoyed me so much.

Michael Clayton: Haven't seen it.

Atonement: Haven't seen it, looked like it was trying to be another cry fest. Heard some good stuff about it though.

There Will Be Blood: Possibly my favorite pick. A great film, but I feel the kinda unconventional feel of the film, especially the ending, may not go over quite so well with the voters.

No Country for Old Men: I hope this wins, personally. While as a whole I think I enjoyed Blood more, this film blew me away. And the ending, you say? I thought it worked perfectly, I don't see what everyone's complaints were (well, I do get the complaints, but I still thought it ended fantastically). Pure entertainment the whole way through, but without feeling dumbed down or cheesy.

After much deliberation I like

No Country for Old Men

... despite some misgivings I have. I have yet too see There Will Be Blood.

There Will Be Blood

wins by a hair over No Country for Old Men.

Juno is my third pick. Atonement is my fourth.

Haven't seen Michael Clayton yet.

John you have to go see There Will Be Blood. I think it comes down to that and No Country. In a battle of questionable endings, There Will Be Blood's is much easier to stomach.

As for Juno, it's a strange movie. I hated the hipper-than-thou-ness of it at first too. But then it eased into a nice rhythm. Ellen Paige - the next Natalie Portman? (I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing)

I could give No Country the Oscar for individual scenes... then once you recall about a dozen incredible scenes I think it becomes no-contest (for ME).

TWBB had some spectacularly visual moments, but it reminded me almost of a stage production... of theater... whereas NCFOM felt like cinema.

SPOILERS!

Think about the scene where Anton is leaving the police station and the overhead shot shows that crazy looking bouquet of black boot scuffs on the floor... while that seems so simple... that's a brilliant touch man.

Then the entire segment from Moss laying awake in bed... all the way until he kills the pit bull... c'mon man... I haven't been that scared in a theater in my entire life.

The "friendo" conversation at the little gas station... man... down to the sunflower wrapper crinkling as it unfolds on the counter... jeez... amazing.

How about when he blows up that car in front of the pharmacy and the chaos running out, as the camera dollies in and Anton calmly goes about his business? Never flinching at the explosive distraction?

OK... so I'm not trying to convince you... but it definitely worked for me. I felt a little lost in the third act, but not that lost.

I still love No Country. This year is actually one of my favorite years for cinema in the past few fears, which seems to be the opposite of popular opinion. Maybe it's because I'm seeing more films in the theaters where they're intended to be viewed.

Matt, you're right about those thrilling scenes. I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the entire way through. Brilliant film, but TWBB beat it by a hair in my eyes.

What are you trying to convince me of? Everything you just mentioned took place in the first and second act. As I said, "the first two acts were Oscar-worthy, but the rest was really a letdown."

either There Will Be Blood or No Country deserves the award. I thought they were the best, most original films and really (this sounds so pretentious) works of art. But Juno was my favorite. I really liked all 5 and its been a long time since i've liked all 5 nominees. Probably not since 2000.
