working between 2 machines-do I have to capture media the same way?

I want to be able to work on the same FCP project both at home and at work.

I know I can email the project file back and forth as I update it. My question is: Do I have to capture my clips the same way on each machine so that Final Cut will recognize them? So if I use Capture Now on machine #1, I should do the same on machine #2?

I'm looking in the manual and online for the answer, but I'm having a tough time coming up with the proper search terms.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Well you would definitely need to bring all of the media back and forth so both machines could access it. And render files would be an issue to deal with. But as far as capture now vs. log and capture- not an issue.

No, as long as the timecode is the same on both files it should be fine. If you capture all the video on one machine, than transfer the same files to the other computer it will work. When you first load the .FCP file into final cut it will complain and say media offline then ask you to re-connect. Find the folder where you put all the media files and it will automatically reconnect all the media files and it will load up fine.

Thanks for the quick responses! Let me see if I get it:

I captured 2 tapes to my machine at the office where I do most of my editing. I can now email my home machine the .fcp file. Then I do a capture now on my home machine of the same two tapes I have already captured at the office. And FCP will recognize the media, based on its timecode, without my having to name all the clips and subclips as I did on my work machine? If so, very cool.

Thats a way to do it, but your more liekly to have problems like that. Best to use the actual files.. Transfur them with an external disk drive or DVD if they are small enough and use the same files, it only takes one accidental timecode break to screw it all up

Just bring a small external drive to work, copy over the captured media, then bring it home. make sure to name it the same name as the drive at work and ou will not need to reconnect.

Why capture twice?
