Best way to size indifocus gear rings?

Got my Indifocus in over the weekend and now I'm trying to fit them to my lenses.

The ring fit my Nikon AI 28mm f/2.8 perfectly, but the set screws are too long for my 50mm f/1.4 and 135 f/2.8

Is the remedy to simply cut these screws in half? What methods have people used without totally messing up the screws threads?
 
Call Tim for those. He'll send you an assortment if the rings didn't come with them.

Also, I recommend fitting a heavy mailing or broccoli rubber band under the ring. It gives the screws something really grippy to land on and keeps them from touching the barrel directly.

I went to Home Depot and bought some extras. For future reference here are details:

The default screws included are 8 - 32 x 1/2"

I bought 8 - 32 x 3/8" and 8 - 32 x 1/4"

Those are probably what Tim usually includes anyway
