Direct recording to regular portable hard drive?

Just wondering if I could buy a cheap portable hard drive with it's own battery pack, like the Yes Nano 1050 (plus 100gb HD) http://www.yesbox.nl/www/cms/cmspage.php?cmspageid=8
can I record directly to this without a P2 card? If I do need a P2 card, can I use this to transfer the files quickly?

No you cannot record directly to the HDD, but you can xfer the P2 card data to it using the HVX and nothing else.

OK, so how can you record direct to a laptop in the field? It must go through FCP to a specially formated HDD? Can you get around the P2 card that way?

Yes, you can, but it doesn't have to be FCP -- there are many programs on both platforms that can accomplish this.

i believe HDVSplit will help you on that situation. Also last time i checked, I could record directly to Adobe Premiere using IEEE1394.
