Would anyone else be interested in a 'sports' section in the 'film making' boards?

I'm fairly new here so apologies if it's been brought up. Judging by the amount of skateboarding, skiing/snowboarding, bike and everything else clips I've seen on here, it seems there would be an audience.

Where this niche falls in my mind are things like topics of shooting under conditions that can't be as manipulated as well as studio setups or on locations where setup times are greater. As in 'what to keep in mind while rolling on my skateboard next to a trotting dragon who will be basejumping into a volcano while holding a brunette damsel with a checkered blouse that I really want to pop'. That sort of thing. Plus sharing experience on setting up zip lines, some of the nice remote helicopter cameras people are building, climbing trees.....you know.

Any thoughts? Does this exist here and I just haven't looked hard enough?

I know this place is already pretty dense, just thought I'd put it out there.

edit: or........anyone know where this already exists?:D

This is a filmmaking site. Do you see ANY forums that don't relate to filmmaking?

Besides this one?

A sports section would destroy the purpose of having a filmmaking site!

I don't think it's going to happen, but not for the reason you describe, Robbie.

Dvxuser is NOT only about filmmaking. There are plenty of filmmakers here, wannabe and otherwise, but there also lots of folks who shoot news, commercials, training videos, weddings/events, music videos, and yes, sports...

But generally the attitude towards different niches of the craft are to lump them together in the same forums. I don't think the trend here is for things to become more splintered and for many more sub-forums to appear. Could be wrong - I've asked about a wedding sub-forum a few times, but the general attitude has always been against it - so no new sports shooting sub-forum is my guess.

Don't worry man. You know I don't run the site:)

So DIY construction details of a dolly to shoot a couple strolling in conversation is okay but the construction of that same dolly to pan across the starting line of a motocross race is strictly prohibited.

Got it. :-Dum(DBG):

There are overlaps in techniques that span many genres. Something like a zipline could easily be used in both a 'film' and a sports flick (sports documentary if you will?). There are plenty of well done sports movies out there that are quite 'filmic.' Just thinking that concentration of heads involved in things like that might be an asset. And like Devon said (edit: before he deleted his post), it might keep that sort of thing out of the purist forums.

I'm not going to cry either way, I'm just curious about the interest.

Well, I guess what you just posted kinda explains why it's not going to happen. Do we really want solid information on how to build a dolly or a zipline hidden away in a sub-forum? Better to have information all in one place (or at least in fewer places) since so much of it is universal to all applications of film/video production.

Good point but I was just thinking more along the lines of a concentration of such techniques, as well has more of a 'place' to throw up some ideas and executions that would NEVER be practical anywhere else.

I'll admit, this is probably just an expression of my laziness in digging through all the corners already in place here.

If there's an insane amount of interest in discussing sports, I'd be glad to create a sub-forum on my site for that purpose. I can use all of the users I can get... my forum's been up for two years and still only has about 40 members... :embarasse

As for this site, though, I agree -- having one off topic forum makes sense. Trying to have topics for every popular subject will make things spiral out of control very easy. I can picture it now:

Subforum: Lighting
Post Topic: What lights to buy?
Post Content: "My wife says we need new fixtures in our living room. What brand of lamps would you recommend that would match my sofa?"
Having too much non-film related talk will simply attract users with no interest in the primary subjects that are discussed here -- which will only lead to irrelevant and junk posts that will make moderation difficult.

id like to see a forum dedicated to this kind of thing, this forum is very film maker based, most of the skate bike forums dont carry the knowledge or interest in the processes that this one does but posts related to sports seem to go unanswered on here

if you find one please send me a pm
