EX1 w/SGpro Screen Grabs

when I turn peaking on with the lens off there is a "hot spot" of focus in the middle of the frame. Is there a was to adjust this by moving the GG?

I'm really keen to see what the big 4 can come up with to solve the edge issues. I'm somewhere in between depressed and optimistic, but as a SG, Brevis and soon to be EX1 owner, I won't buy a flip unit until I'm confident this compromise is solved. Interesting how the landscape has evolved - 35mm adapters have become so important that it's affecting cam purchase decisons.

Nice grabs Richard - wet weather adds so much texture to a shot. Any footage to share? :)

Actually, it's not all adapters. We've been working closely with a few EX1 owners who have been very, very methodically testing, and tweaking. We'll have a tuning guide for the EX1 up early next week...and some very crispy footage to go with.

"gnarly vignetting", "absolutely depressing", etc... = opinions.
Agreed, vignetting & edge to edge sharpness can be results of certain cameras + adapters, but great images are often not technically perfect.
a bit off topic, but just rambling :)

dont forget the lens. my nikon 50mm 1.4 wide open prepuces a simular result, some what sharp in the center but horrible soft at the edges. sharpens up after 2.8.

Rumi, I used to think my 50mm Nikkor 1.4 was soft on the corners also, but when I got my Brevis Flip and used it on my HVX I was surprised how sharp it was.

There's no question that we've made great R&D strides in making one adapter work well with most camera's out there. Having interchangeable imaging elements has given us great performance with small and large cameras in the same package, but not every camera interacts predictably.

On the EX1/Brevis flip, if you're zooming beyond Z75 or so, edge softness starts to creep in. Carleton Holt has a thread fired up over at the Cinevate forum, and is doing just fine at Z71 with his EX1/Brevis flip/Cf1le combination. He's also worked out a tweak using the autofocus to fine tune averaged back focus. I suspect his footage will be up on Tuesday or so.

The flip system is working with the XH-A1 much better than we would have predicted. The stillmotion.ca crew has been pushing their rigs very hard, and are seeing exactly what we've seen. The characteristic XH-A1 chromatic blue fringe at high contrast edges simply disappears when using the Brevis flip. The edge to edge sharpness is outstanding with 650 lines res (1080i) at all four corners on our DSC chart. We'll have our own analysis of this observation up next week or so in a video testing segment.

Ya know, I'm a novice when it comes to some of this stuff and I don't consider myself to be a DP, but aside from the vignetting and the dog being a little soft I think the images look pretty good. Take it for what you will, just my two cents. I'm really interested to see what Wayne has to say.

Richard,
You want to fill the image with the entire chart . Its designed to be the entire image, then those resolution patterns refer to real lines of resolution - i.e 700- or 800 lines, but only with the whole frame .To see what your resolution is when you are zoomed in more, you want to back the camera up a few feet then zoom in again until you fill the image with the whole chart. Then you can compare to the previous image.
All I saw that's weird from this is that you lose focus when you zoom in and develop some CA. However you should not neccessarily be able to hold focus on an adapter screen while zooming. It would be a nice perk but its asking a lot from the optics. Each zoom setting will have its own best focus point.

What i noticed when you first got to full SLR framing was pretty bad vignetting on the sides. That's also what we saw in your image posts. It looked pretty sharp off hand but i would want to see the full chart.
When you zoomed in you began to lose the vigmnette but you were awfully far zoomed in so i don't know if it was usable.

This is not a surprise to me but indicates that its still not ready for prime time on the EX. Shoot some more tests at different EX zoom positions and focus each one separately always filling the whole chart. and please indicate your f stop on the EX. I expect that should affect things radically , but maybe not with this set-up.

Check it out at f 5.6 and f8 on the EX iris for fun. I noticed on the Brevis flip and the Letus that I could finally get good corners at f8. Fair ones at 5.6. Good for exteriors I guess but the vignette is a whole 'nother problem.

You're way ahead of me though. I shot my tests a few days ago but have just figured out how to load them into FCP - not ready for frame grabs and posted images yet,

Thanks and keep shooting them charts.

I can't really get rid of the vignetting even when I zoom all the way in. With that said, I am happy with the sharpness. Is it weird the the vignetting follows as I zoom in?

Richard

It's definitely not normal. But mostly because of the EX-1 lens. As you zoom you should be sort of "cropping" out the vignetting and edge softness but that's not the case with the EX-1.

Anyone know if Wayne plans a fix?

Richard,

Are you saying you're satisfied on the sharpness based on the test you posted! i hope not.

By the time you filled the screen you had hardly any of the chart in the picture and none of the real resolution information.

The sharpness you see when you are zoomed out and looking at the little window showing the full screen is not at all representative of what you will have when you fill the screen.

All this test shows is vignetting, nothing else of importance.
The vignetting is related to the Letus wth all the adapters so far. Wayne is using a Letus flip so - presumably if and when Letus fixes the problem they will fix it for both units.

I'm hoping you will post images of the full chart so we can actually see what the SG Letus flip combo is doing at different video camera apertures.
