I need to know what mic is best for an outdoor shoot. I am doing a commercial and the first part involves a bunch of elementary students singing. Casual setting (not choir or anything), outdoors, maybe at most a 30 minute shoot time. Ok, there's some wind over here, so I need some wind protection... are the fuzzy things that slip on top of the black foam that comes with the mic OK? Are those good enough for wind protection?
I have an AKG blue series 300 with ck98 shotgun cap and ck91 cardioid cap. ....I'm thinking shotgun type mics would be horrible for recording a bunch of people singing because of the narrow pickup pattern. Is that right? Which leaves me with the ck91 cardioid, but i'm not so sure about that either... Especially, how close am I supposed to get the mic to the group singing? What if I want the mic off frame and I'm doing a wide shot? I mean, if I put the CK91 off frame that would be too far a distance to get good sound right?
Ok, so my main questions are... what is the best thing for this scenario to get good sound? What mics are best? Are cardioid mics good for outdoor recordings of a group singing like above?
Anyway, I checked around my local area for sound guys, this is what I found:
One guy has shotgun senheisser condenser mics MK6. He's charging like $350 though...an arm and a leg basically??
Another guy for hire has large diaphragm mics the neumann 103 and AT 4033. He's thinking of a two mic setup using those two mics. His fee is $100.
***Are large diaphragm condenser mics good for that kind of situation?
Problem is both don't really have good wind protection aside from the black foam windscreen that comes with the mics. The second guy just said that he'd cover the mics with a pair of socks (like socks for people...those kind of socks not mic socks)....?? But he would check around if he could get some wind protection stuff.
I look forward to your replies,
JM
