FCP6 slower than FCP5 ?

Should I be experiencing a big difference? I just upgraded.

I'm a shooter who regularly puts together assemble edits and small stuff. In DVCPRO-HD and DV. I'm on an older PowerBook with the proper specs to run FCP6. But I've seen a dramatic shift in performance; even the UI seems sluggish. Nothin else on my machine has changed.

My Specs:
Apple PowerBook G4 1.25GHz, 1.25GB RAM, 64MB Video RAM, FW800 drive, FCP 6.0

Thanks,
Andrew

It's not the software to be honest it's your hardware. FCP 6 is optimized for the latest Intel hardware and graphics cards. Your gear is older PowerPC hardware with an older graphics card. So yeah technically speaking FCP 6 is slower- on your equipment. Either you upgrade your hardware or downgrade your software if you're having performance concerns.

This is good to know... I won't be upgrading to 6.

Thanks, Noah.

No doubt that FCP6 rocks on a new workstation. I've used FCP since version 3.0, and simply haven't ever experienced a dramatic shift backwards in performance.

I'm gonna stick with FCP6

I still use a PPC powermac G5 and it works fine with FCp6. the machine is dual 2.7ghz with 4.5gb of ram. Runs everything fine, but I reckon a powerbook would struggle....

In your opinion, how would a 2.0 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, PPC iMac g5 work with FCP6? FCP5.04 runs super smooth when I don't have any other programs running (Firefox, dvd player, etc).

dcho787,

I think your iMac would work fine with FCP6 and Studio 2. I'd bump up your RAM to 2 or 3 GBs though.

And, remember to go into System Preferences and change the Processor Performance from "Automatic", to "Best" or "Higher" er whatever. I always forget to do this with my iMac :)

I've been editing DVCPRO-HD and DV footage on my 1.25GHz PowerBook for the past few weeks, and have to say that FCP6 is kicking butt! I don't notice the slowdown I did at first; but I haven't changed any hardware or software either. Still slower than FCP 5.1.4 Hmm.
