EDIT

I will be shooting a commercial for an up and coming fashion show. the shoot will include a runway with models walking down, what would be the best way to shoot this? and from what angles?

when edited the commercial will be only 30 seconds, and there will be 10 models total representing 10 designers. I will freeze each model to flash a designer name, and throughout flash to dance performers and a musical artist.

opinions will be greatly appreciated

I'd say get various angles.

Get a nice side view, with a small angle, and give the camera a tilt. This will give it a nice effect, so it's like there walking on an angle.

You can also do some zooms, or some nice close ups on their faces. I can already visualize this in my head.

You can get shots directly in front, but I would try to keep away from that. One or two or three wouldn't be a bad idea though. Just my opinion though.

I think the side shots would be really nice, cutting back and forth to some nice wides and close ups, and really try to get that shallow depth of field.

Again, this is all my opinion, and how I would have an idea as if I was going to do this kind of job. I'm just trying to give you some help on it, so don't take my word FULLY for this, as you probably have creative ideas in mind.

When you get on set just play around and get some sweet angles. Another really cool shot would be to get a steadicam, and follow them as they walk. You can either circle around them an walk at the same time, or stay at their side, or just make your own cool, unique moves up on the spot :)

Good luck,

Robbie

I have no idea how many cameras you have for this, but if its one - tell them its not enough for what you are being asked to do.

Fashion is pretty standard fare when shooting. Id love to see you get a steadicam on those front rows Robbie :P Thats the primo real estate in fashion and if there were space and you went ahead and did it, I doubt you would get a call back.

Make sure your tripods are high and eye level with the models, no tilt angle whatsoever. Cameras set to medium wide.

Positions something like this. The m's are the runway and cam positions. You will want to know the ques also so you get a MS of the deigner when they come out. Camera 1 aimed at top right corner of runway. Camera 2 aimed at back stage centre. If you can get a third camera - opposite 2 aimed at same place with a quit a bit more telphoto so models are full frame as they hit the thier mark at start of runway, but audience eye level.

If just one camera its where camera 2 is.

Dont mess around with fancy camera moves, your job is to shoot clothes which happen to be on models, models arent the subject.

Sorry my above post refers only to the runway portion of the shoot, and I just reread your spec - youll be flashing designer names, I guess the actual designers wont be present?

That would give you like 2 seconds for the model to walk, and freeze for a designer logo, and a musical artist cut inbetween.

That alone sounds incredibly difficult to pull off, and the commercial might get tedious. Don't let me bring you down though, give it whatcha got.

soo i just shot it today, i think for the amount im getting paid, and for the resources i have. It went quite well. here are some grabs(not full res.)

i was shooting on a sony fx7. for the dancers i took one shot of their routine with my kessler crane, then two more handheld. and for the models i did one take with the crane from "camera 3" as noel evans displayed. And then shot them in pairs from "camera 2" and then did the final clap run head on.

thanks, should be sometime this coming week. im waiting for the sound guy to send me the audio. and then the voice over girl to send me her part. deadline is the 20th, so ill be sure to post up around that date.

also will be on mtv and vh1 in socal early march. more info to come

Ya sorrry man, wasnt what I was envisioning.

the grabs? or the set up of the shoot?

if it was the set up being different than your vision, do you think the grabs came out well?

and if it was the grabs that your werent in-visioning, what angles do you think would be better suited? (incase i run into this kinda of thing again)

I was thinking big stage the works. I think your shots look ok. Looks like on the small runway shots you had the camera angle/level right. One thing that bothers me, and I dont know what level of control you had, was the exposure on the models. Would have been a world of difference even with some basic lighting.

agreed, lighting would have made a world of difference. I have no lights to work with, and the person who hired me said lighting would be fine... so comes back to doing the best i could with the experience and equipment i have, i'll be sure to post up the finished product once i finish it up. feel free to criticize it heavily. I'm new to commercial video production and need as much criticism as you can throw my way. thats the only way ill get better. now im off to search for some basic lighting tutorials

thanks noel for the comments!

I have shot a lot of runway footage over the years. Since your in post, I would recommend using Motion or After Effects to highlight your footage. Here is a link of something I did with runway footage I hope it helps. The video is best viewed with firefox.

Yeah, punch that thing up with some motion graphics, and that VO is just a scratch track, right? Get a pro VO.

castillo: wish i would have seen that before the shoot, looks very nice, and right now im wishin i had ae again. guess its time to play with motion.

deepfocus: yea it certainly is a scratch track... its my voice, just waiting for the person who hired me to send me the actual pro VO.
