Stumbled onto this... they even copied the exact text from the DVrig Pro website. I'd still be interested in some opinions about all these indian products. Anybody ever take the plunge??

I have a rig that I'm satisfied with, but always looking for a good deal or a backup.

Sucks that everyone keeps gettin' ripped off. I don't think it could be on the same page as the DVrig, but the price is definitely right.

Dang.

Wow, before long I will be able to buy copies of myself from India. This is getting a bit out of hand. Also why are so many people interested in these Low price no warranty knock offs. There are respected companies that can help you save money on gear. Indifocus, Indi Snap, Letus, these are all companies with proven customer service and products that are priced well bellow the mainstream Arris, Petroffs, and PS techniques. What kind of quality can we expect when we start looking for budget versions of the budget gear.

I am not discounting your question Ryan...and thanks for bringing it to our attention, but These boards are covered with who has the this Indian rip off or that Indian rip off.

Jason,

There is still a huge disparity between first and third world. I live in the latter, thats why I was "forced" by economics to make the plywood skater which has become the most viewed diy device in this forum.

BUT, being forced to create ones own devices for his own needs is were i draw the moral line. I have high respects for the artist/craftsman that originally designed and built the mini skater thats why i never ventured into mass producing them even though i have an entire functional carpentry department that can churn out these this things for less than a hundred dollars without the head.

Instead, I gave away my plans for free to hundreds of people all around the world who want to build one for themselves. Its not gonna make money for me but i feel i shud not profit from someone else's work. Capitalist countries thrive on this concept; Profit profit profit, money money money.

I feel irritated sometimes when the plans i gave for free ends up on e-bay.

The designs are for DIY in return for stuffs i also got from these boards,

Stealing for profit sucks.

Just my food for thought on this things.

Ted

Wow indian stuff off ebay really has blown up in the past week, they've been making(stealing designs) stuff for a while now but suddenly everyone seems to be paying attention.

Thanks Teddy Bear...I understand you point. I apologize for not remembering how global are DVX community is.

Because $600 for a piece of metal that goes over my shoulder is WAY too much.

Like the stainless rods that some companys charge $60 or more for and that are sold in every hardware shop for $15 or less?

...oh it is the company´s sticker, support and R&D for such complicated devices as metall tubes that makes them so eypensive- I understand.

Well, just about everyone saying they wouldn't buy from the Indian companies are contradicting them self. So, don't buy from wal-mart because it's not made in the US. Most likely, you'll see it's made in India or China or some other country other than U.S.

Where they're made isn't the point. That's not the problem. Cool Lights for example made all their equipment in China and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. The point is that someone spent a lot of time, money and effort to come up with a design that these other companies simply steal and remarketed for half the price.

People ,there are R&D cost involve here. The person that spent so much time and effort should be rewarded. But If the indian company makes a copy. and can't be sued. I guess is really up to the person to get the company.

I also understand the point of not wanting to pay more and in this business there is no loyalty . And if the indian company can live with it and someone wants to buy it God bless them both. What goes around comes around.

But again , You get what you pay for. I was looking at that copy rig. and I notice that the belt is a clip on. I sure hope that it doesn't come apart when the camera is on it. because it is going to be painful when the camera goes crashing on the floor or the rod goes poking in to your body.

Well , there are copies and there are copy copies.

Maybe someone should ask them to do a P+S skater copy. I know that there are many copies around that goes for 200 - 700 usd.

Without starting too much conflict here (as it seems that's where this thread is headed), you've got to take to point that EVERY product out there, in any field, is potentially a "copy". If everyone in the world was into video production, I can guarantee you that the big boys (walmart, costco, sams, target, etc) would be selling their versions of these same products at a fraction of the cost. I'm thinking somewhere around the 30-50 dollar range.

If someone can make and sell something cheaper than someone else, more power to them. That's how business works, and that's how the world works. That's true no matter where you are, or who came up with the original idea.

Quality and customer support is my only issue here.

Ryan, with an attitude like that you'll see the end of innovation. It's why patents were developed in the first place. If someone spent years developing a new invention only to watch some low-life thief copy the design and sell it for cheap, why would the inventor invent? Why not go lie on the beach somewhere instead?

I think what he means is that this copying issue is not something new that just happened yesterday or a couple weeks ago. In the history of human kind one copies the other and it hasn't led to the meltdown of innovation.

That just my interpretation of Ryan's comment.

Not if the products they're selling is a ripoff of someone else's patented design. Everything is a copy in the same sense that all cars are motor vehicles, but if Toyota starts producing cars that look and act like Honda Civics, there would be hell to pay. It's no problem when you take the time to come up with your own design and sell it at a lower cost than everybody else. But ripping off someone else's sweat to undersell them is low.

The whole reason patents exist is to protect the inventor's rights in their own invention -- at least for long enough that they can recoup their investment costs. That's not what's happening with these knockoffs -- as soon as any saleable product comes out, someone overseas rips it off and puts out a knockoff.

It's a problem. It's a far worse problem now that we're in a more global economy where ebay equalizes purchasing around the world.

Well, I'll have some rails and an achromat from them and I'll let you know. Possibly a follow focus as well.....

So...Redrocks, Sgpro's, Infifocus, Cinevate, Letus were the first to make rails, a matte box and a 35mm adapter? Probably not. So, why aren't you buying from Arri and P+S? I mean, where is the hard work and effort for making all their products? Oh, wait, you wouldn't want to drop 10k on a 35mm adapter when you can by from one of the guys who started out here on the boards for a fraction of the cost...now, that just doesn't seem right either.

You're still missing the point. Did Letus, Redrock, Cinevate etc. simply copy the P+S design? Or did they spent years and thousands of dollars in R & D to come up with THEIR OWN design that they market for a fraction of the cost. There are threads on this forum from the creators of these adapters that detailed the process; most of it span many months. The patent is not on the concept of the 35mm adapter, the patent is on the design of the adapter that makes it works. P+S were the first to come out with a working design and kudos for them, but there are so many other ways to make adapters without violating patents and these other companies did exactly that.

That is NOT what these India companies are doing. They're simply taking apart existing products, producing them cheaply and selling it at a fraction of the price.

Make a stand!

Make a stand!

When you've got no cash and there seems to be endless toys to buy, it can be so tempting to buy a knock off. But Barry and others make a compelling argument. The community should really try and make on a stand on this. Gotta be accountable, show the love to those that are helping make the indie world a better place to live in. When we erode values and everything becomes about lowest common denominator...ehhhh, not a good place to live in.

Ok, hopping off the horse now :)
