cardioid mic for outdoor ambience?

I have an AKG series 300 w/ ck91 cardioid cap. I also have a short shotgun cap ck98. Anyway, my question is... is the CK91 good to use if I'm trying to capture the ambience of the surrounding?

I'm helping out with some commercial advertisement project, and instead of using the on camera mic for the dvx100b, I was thinking of using my AKG ck91 cardioid mic. Is that OK to attach on camera? And would I need a shockmount to stabilize the mic? If so, what shockmount is good for on-camera? Or is the cardioid better off if it's handled on the boompole by someone?

Thanks,

JM

its about patern and [placing - you will hear camera noise and your hands, take the mic outside the camera if you are working normaly and if not :-)

I just have the mics right now, and I am researching what to buy for my two caps...

For the cardioid, I would need to buy a baby ball gag and shockmount right? is there anything else I would need?

And for my ck98 shotgun cap, I would need some zeppelin kit and boompole, right?

Anything I'm missing?

By the way, where is the best place to buy these stuff online? (dvxuser discount?)

Ah ok, so you recommend putting the cardioid on the boompole?

Won't the shockmount eliminate camera and hand noise though?

Thanks,

Marv

If you're talking about mechanical vibration, probably. But not airborn sounds. In a quiet place put your ear right up within an inch of the camera mic mount and roll tape, zoom in and out, adjust focus, move your hands, etc. Anything you hear will be picked up by the mic. The mic doesn't need to be on a boom to record ambience, just not on the camera. Put it in a shockmount on a pistol grip or on a mic stand instead.

it will but fur awai it will eliminate it for sure :-)
baby ball gag , why th f, you need it
regullar foam for indoors
and dead rat over you can make your self for outside

http://www.olsenaudio.com/Mic-Muff-Web-Info.pdf
check if one of these would sit over your 91 foam
it woud cost you 10$ to make it
olso check with k-tek directly
( brenda parker ) if they could make you one short
dont buy anything from robbing barrons ( rycote)
also k-tek boom poles are my favor ( ad ambient but as the euro$ went up its became expencive in usa)

Ah ok, thanks guys that makes sense. I'll look into getting a pistol grip for the ambience stuff. Do you guys have any recommendations and/or links to good ones to buy? There are also some shockmounts that are also pistol grips right?

Oleg, thanks, i looked at the brochure you linked to. So that fur cover will slide over the black foam that comes with the mic? Will that fur-cover be good for outdoor usage where there's more wind noise than indoors?

By the way, why don't you like the baby ball gag?

Thanks again,

JM

PS: how do you make a windcover for your mics for $10?

i dont like to be robbed for nothing :-)
call ktek , speak with manfred or brenda
they would make sure you will be happy
where to buy ?

I live in Guam, so I have to order online, there's not any local stores/dealers here that carries all this stuff.
