I love my Marshall HD monitor but use it way less than I thought I would. I'm looking for something more practical that I can mount to my camera and still go handheld if I need to. The Marshall's weight makes this prohibitive.

I don't need 7" size, I would rather go down to even 4" if I had to. I would love to find something that approaches the quality of the LCD. Anyone know of some good quality smaller monitors? The priority would be picture quality and a very light unit that could run on AA batteries or something like it.

Any ideas?

Hey Steven, I recommend the Ikan V8000HD monitor. It's a little bigger than the Marshall at 8'', but it's made of plastic and is considerably lighter. It runs off of Sony NP batteries. I was using it this weekend and for a large part of the day I was hand holding the noga arm instead of mounting to the camera. Works quite well.

Thanks jade, it's just too frickin' big. I did look at this option although I haven't actually seen a real one in action. Anyone know of anything smaller?

Man I just had this conversation with another user.

You know what a great LCD is right now? The RED ONE LCD. That thing is so tiny and light. Sure it has a bad viewing angle, but if it had more inputs it'd be KILLER.

" Sure it has a bad viewing angle"
too true. If more than one person needs to be seeing that thing it's done for.
When more output become hot at once i see the red lcd getting a lot more use. Right now i've seen it mostly used just for the menus.

res isn't that high but at least the price is right. I'm looking for something similar myself. Of course i'll be shooting with a DVX so res won't be as much of an issue... probably.

I've seen a few people mod some evf's from eng cameras for use with adapter rigs. Maybe that's more what you're looking for?

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for alright. I'm beta testing a non flip adapter right now and I'm not used to shooting with an upside down image and, at least for test shots, I would like to figure out something that flips the image without a huge appendage on the camera.

Steve, you'll find likely that the current crop of smaller LCD's are pretty useless with regard to focus, color, or exposure...but OK for framing. I've been there with a few different designs, and have abandoned all of them. I'd go farther and suggest that if it's not at least a true 1280x720 panel (the IKan is not), then wait until one becomes commercially available. You don't want to hear this (it's huge) but the best I've seen to date is a laptop with a 1920x1200 pixel screen. At 17" and 9lbs, not exactly the form factor you're looking for, but oh so nice.

I'd guess that in a very short while OLED HD sub 7" HD screens will become available....

PLEASE CONTINUE!!!
What are the technical aspect of achieving this?
Is there any way you can connect the cable (via a transformer?) to go into the av output (Canon HV20). Most old, or even newer, viewfinders have 'interesting' looking cables.

So, you're testing the G35
How are you liking it so far?

Let's not threadjack though.
Back to the monitor. I want to find out about that too.

i too would like something to look at and bring on set. Not necessiarily HD, doesnt eevn have to be 16x9, but something that delivers nice colors, and something that is more like my electronic view finder rather than my lcd screen which has more magenta cast.

It would be used mostly for checking color balance and exposure. As wel as something to have the crew watch, for example, when they are doing fire flicker and such..

Me too.

The EX1 has a killer LCD - 3.5" at 1920x480

Seems kind of ideal. Any ideas on where to get that kind of panel?

The classic portable Sony PVM9045QM 9-inch picture evaluation monitor with high resolution Trinitron CRT .

Equipped with a component (Y/R-Y/B-Y or RGB) input and it can be operated on AC and DC.

For color you can´t beat CRT.

They can be found for arround $250 on Ebay.

I put the component output of my HVX on it.
Not HD, but at least you can see exposure and color.
