Order a mic in the usa for a pal cam

Hi there!

I'm about to order a Rode NTG-1 but i've just seen that the mic was powered with an external +48 Volt phantom power source. What does it really mean? Can I use the mic with a PAL dvx?

here's the bh link : http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...il&Q=&sku=400812&is=REG&si=feat#goto_itemInfo

Sorry the question is probably dumb but.. yeah I don't want to order a 250$ item and being pissed when i receive it in switzerland... :)

Thanks a lot!

PAL or NTSC doesn't enter into the audio equation. What counts is does your camera or preamp/mixer supply phantom power. If it does, then you're golden with the NTG-1. If it doesn't, then go for the NTG-2 instead - it's the exact same mic but with an internal battery to provide power for when phantom is unavailable.

Given that 48v phantom is for all practical purposes a global standard, and Pal vs NTSC has little effect on the sound, other than broadcast level standards which is not an issue in your case I would, that NTG will work perfectly fine, unless I'm mistaken, in which someone should correct me.

Of course, perfectly fine for a Rode ntg, I prefer my mkh-416 anyday, after using an NTG-2 extensively. But that is beside the point.

thanks a lot guys! my dvx has an XLR Audio Input with +48-V Phantom Power Supply ( copy past from a website sorry hehe :) ) so I think that I'm gonna go for a ntg-1.

Thanks again your posts are really usefull!

last question wich is stupid too, I've seen a lot of D.I.Y around here, should I invest in a boom or just make one with iron stuff etc...? if yes do you have any suggestion about that?

A lot of people DIY with painter's poles and the like but remember that low weight, strength, and silence are all essential qualities and it's hard to obtain all of those at once with readily available materials from the local hardware store. The pros overwhelmingly favour carbon fibre poles which can easily run from the middle hundreds up into the high hundreds of dollars, not including the mic shockmount itself and any wind protection. Aluminum is a lower cost alternative but think about holding it steady at arms length over your head for the duration of a 30 minute interview when considering the cost/weight tradeoffs - every ounce saved is one less shooting pain in your neck and shoulders at the end of the day.

Okay, do you have any sugestions for a not to expensive boom with a shockmount that fit a ntg-1? I'm gonna pick up a deadcat for the ntg-1 is it a waste of money?
