Blu-ray on a PC. How are you doing it?

OK I am mac and PC based. I found out that its impossible to make a blu-ray dvd on a mac at the moment.

So what about PC? Everything I have so far tried has failed.

DVDitPro HD? Doesn't support Vista. WTF? Waste of time and effort.

Ulead DVD Factory 6 Plus states it makes Blu-ray. Doesn't accept any .H264 MP4 content!!!

DVD Architect Pro 4.5 doesn't do Blu-ray.

So what else is there? What are people using to author Blu-ray dvds with menues and chapters etc?

Any answer will be appreciated.

Adobe Encore can make simple BluRays on Vista PC - I did quite a view - no problem.

If you want all that flashing features including Java interactive layer and all take "Sonic Scenarist" - but it is expensive as a new Cadillac and the Interface and Workflow sucks as hell.

...oh and it does of course not support vista.

So basically I am up the creek without a paddle at the moment. I have several blu-ray weddings to do this year and I hope there's a solution on either the mac or PC come early summer.

Really suprised a solution for video isn't in place. The burners are there, and so is the media. Millions of PS3's out there as well as millions of HD ready Plasmas.

All the editing packages boast HD, but don't give us a way of burning it to Blu-ray to show away from the mac/pc. What a crock.

I think that the only way to author Blu-ray on a Mac is with Adobe Encore CS3. (Scroll down a bit to see the different disc-drive and software bundles.)

http://www.videoguys.com/blu-ray.html

I am currently contemplating this bundle for Blu-ray authoring as well.

It sucks that DVD Studio Pro or iDVD doesn't have any kind of Blu-ray support yet. I can't image that they will wait too much longer to add the support for Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro users.

Be wary that DVDitHD doesn't work with Vista.

I have Adobe Encore CS3 and its rubbish. It only has 25i and 50P on PAL. If it was 25P and 50i it would be fine.

ON NTSC it has 24p 30i 60P.

The trouble is not burning a Blu-ray dvd. You can do that from the Vegas timeline. The problem is making a DVD nice. Not good giving a customer a Blu-ray dvd that starts as soon as they pop it in the player. They expect menues, and they expect nice menues, considering vl-ray is meant to be the next generation of DVD.

I need a DVD Studio Pro authoring type product than can handle blu-ray disk burning. And there doesn't seem to be one.

I thought that the whole point of the new blu-ray menus was to have the movie start instantly for all those people who forgot their remotes, and to have the menus only in a popup over the lower third of the screen.

Oh well. Guess alot of people still expect full blown menus like DVD.

Steve,

Sorry to hear Encore CS3 doesn't work for your needs. Seems odd to me to have 25i and 50p. Shouldn't it be 25p, 50i, and 50p?

I too want an update for DVD Studio Pro for Blu-ray authoring. I hope Apple doesn't wait around too long to give us this. Lately, there has been a lot of speculation that Apple doesn't want to give people Blu-ray now, because they just announced that they will be providing HD rentals directly to their Apple TV box.

I can understand them not wanting to put Blu-ray drives/burners into their notebooks and iMacs yet, but why not at least have support for it in DVD Studio Pro?

At this rate I'd be pretty happy with simple Blu-ray authoring support in iDVD.

Demistate,

From my experience only Warner Bros. Blu-ray's and HD-DVD's have the auto-start play mode. Every other studio's movies seem to have a menu, but you can also access the menu without having to stop the movie.

Yes its very strange the Encore has 25i and 50P. It almost seems like a typo when they made the program!!!

There just doesn't seem to be anything out there yet. Film in HD, edit in HD.....and output in SD? Crazy!

I think I must be overlooking a program that will do this. What is frustrating is that LG has just brought out a new 6x Blu-ray burner for only £170. So the hardware is there, the blanks are there, but the software isn't.

It is there but pretty expensive.

Sonic Scenarist HD and Sony Blueprint can do everything you want.
It is like in those days when we started making DVDs.

Very simple consumer or prosume software - cheap, handy and nice interface on one hand, or $30000 software with the whole shabang but a pretty steep learning curve and interface (especialy the scenarist) that is a pain in the butt.

I have no encore here to check, but if I remember that right it takes any framerate/P/i you want if you edit in Premiere CS3 and hit the "export to Encore" button. I´m quite sure I done 25P that way.

By the way, that $$$$ $onic $cenarist does not encode. It´s only authoring.
I think if you do the encoding in premiere in the framerate/P/i you want Encore will eat it.

You don't even need to "export to Encore". One should be able to just use Adobe Media Encoder to export the files in the desired format, then import those as assets in Encore. Encore will treat them as "do not transcode", meaning it will simply burn them to the Blu-Ray disc as-is.

Encore is pretty good about being format-agnostic in that sense. Though, I haven't had the opportunity to do this with Blu-Ray, so there may still be some "gotchas".

AVID DVD by Sonic.

I am successfully burning blu-ray discs now on a regular basis.

It took me about 3 weeks of troubleshooting to get the process streamlined, but everything works fairly well now and the results are amazing.

I just found this out today (no blu-ray in dvd studio pro). I've been working SD (call me a luddite) but I am getting a Canon XH-a1 next week. The whole purpose for buying this camera was Blu-ray output for a well-paying client.

I guess I'm "lucky" though, because I have CS3, though I haven't registered it and was planning to sell it along with a laptop. I was planning on using the roughly $3k i was hoping to get for them (they are brand new - given to me for a job in lieu of paying a fair wage.) I'm pretty angry with apple. I mean, I really went out my way to purchase a new Macbook pro and final cut studio when I had CS3 and a quality PC given to me. I just didn't want to move away from Mac/FCS.

Here's my suggestion. Those frustrated should organize and pick a date to bombard Apple with emails, calls, blog posts, etc., expressing frustration. Surely people have access to listserves (FCP user groups, perhaps?) Post the date and suggestions on several forums and see what happens.

This cannot be a technical problem on their end, but instead a financial decision to dismiss loyal consumers for their own profit in Apple TV distribution. Frankly, it's the kind of crap Bill Gates was accused of doing for years. My new Macbook Pro just lost some its luster in a serious way.

Anyone interested in picking a "bombard" Apple date, let me know...

From what I heard on the grapevine, Apple is taking DVDSP towards online streaming rather than Blu-ray. I really hope this rumour is nothing more than that. From what I can gather they think downloadable content is the way to go rather than disk.

CS3 does all you need for blue ray and Encore is a doddle to use and very similar to DVDSP. I was happy around it in an hour or so.

They are looking into downloadable content, just look at all the work being put into the itunes store and apple tv. As far as DVDSP, I can't see why Apple would not add Blu Ray authoring. It's gotta happen. It better happen!!!!

I can't picture apple not having Blu Ray support coming soon. It just doesn't make sense. So it seems there is no "real" full Blu Ray authoring software out for any system, which isn't too surprising actually, since Blu Ray just recently won the high dief DVD war, and the format is still relatively new.

Apple must be waiting to release DVDSP with Blu Ray capabilities when they include Blu Ray burners on their machines.

Ok, so DVDSP cant burn to blu-ray....BUUUUUTTTT... it can make a disk image. A HD disk Image. So all youve got to do is get some burning software (like nero or ROxio or whatever) that can burn that image. check out

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/dvdstudiopro/mastering.html

This says that you can use the CMF 2.0 standard image for HD DVD's. THen just find a bit of PC software tat can burn these, and you dont have to worry about making menu's in them at all. AND you dont tie up your Mac with burnin CD's.

Everyones happy ;)

hope this helps
