Norms Grip Gear

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know about this in case anyone is wanting to buy grip gear. I found out that Norms Studio Equipment offers a 25% discount if you pay when you order. I'm not sure exactly what their prices are for things (I know they are cheaper than matthews, and good quality gear) but I should be getting a price list later this week from them.

Is this a cash-in-person discount or could I use a credit card from Portland Oregon sorta thing?

I'm interested, because I need some more C-stands, junior stands and maybe a hi-roller or two. Could you forward me the price list when you get it? nelsonentertainment AT yahoo.com

Matthew,

Are you serious? Wow, that's a REALLY good deal. I own mostly Norms gear, it's really great stuff, I would say the best you can buy other than American.

If you are correct, that is the best deal on the market by far. I bought a huge load of it about ten years ago and I can't even recall what kind of discount I got but it wasn't 25%.

Shawneous, just call them, they are in North Hollywood. A uniquely non-internet company ;-0

I will post the list here when I get in the mail. You can also call them and order a free catalog sent to you. Depending on what the list price is for stuff, I might forgo getting used c-stands and combo stands and just buy them new.

Oh, and I hope they take credit cards also because that is how I'd like to pay.

Matthew

I got the catalog yesterday along with the price list. They offer 25% off the list price when you pay COD (not sure if they take credit cards or if you have to wire the money straight up.) They also have a 5% of list price packaging/crating fee (which can add up, but still is pretty good!) If you want to know prices, just visit http://www.cinemagadgets.com/index.php and find stuff made by norms and then subtract 25% from the price (every item from norms listed there seems to be the same list price from norms as far as I've seen.)

Hope this helps. I know they will be getting allot of business from me soon.

Matthew

Sweet!! So...how do we get this deal and how long is it good for?

Considering the catalog they sent me says: Effective January 1, 1992, and the Price List dated January 1, 2006 says on the front "C.O.D. 25% Discount" I would guess that's their standard business policy! So take your time, no rush or group orders needed.

Matthew:

I just priced out a real doorway dolly with the side boards for $1,280.00 after discount and a full set 6x6' scrim set for something like $420.00??!! Wow, these are great prices. Also, the Norms C-Stands with the 40" arms are $154.00!!! The best deal going anywhere and cheaper than almost all other C-stands other than the Amvonas.

Thanks for the tip although my bank account is totally hating on you at the moment ;-)

Yeah, that doorway dolly is going to be mine once I put my order together. It will go great under my EZ-Jib that I got today.

The only place that I found cheaper, quality c-stands was B&H with the matthews basic c-stands (w/grip arm) for $139 I believe. However, once you factor in shipping, they probably come out to the same price (or cheaper with norms since freight seems to be very cheap shipping.)

I know that the 25% knocked off almost $1300 what I was expecting to pay--which is good considering I keep adding stuff to my RED camera and grip package.

Good news, Norms will take credit cards and still give you the 25% discount. That's really great for people like me because I can go ahead and order stuff!

Modern Studio Equip

Modern Studio Equip

I beg to differ about Norms being the cheapest place to buy C-stands. I have been doing business with Norms fo almost 20 years, they are great people, my go to place for sandbags, they have great deals on lightweight aluminum baby stands, and I use them for recovering my flags and nets. However, Modern Studio Equipment, also in North Hollywood is where we get nearly all of our grip gear (we have a lighting and grip rental house in North Hollywood). The last time I checked the price with the 25% discount (same policy as Norms) was $128.00. More importantly, these stands are considerably better than the Norms stands, they have stainless steel bases and far superior gripheads. They have an online catalog, and have incredible prices on rags (6x6 thru 20x20 butterflies and overheads). Tell em Keith sent ya!

How are you figuring that they have the cheapest quality C-Stands? This is what I came up with:

001-1071 40" SLIDING LEG GRIP STAND (STAINLESS STEEL VERSION) $150.00
002-1210 GRIP HEAD (TRUE 2 ½") $32.00
002-1215 GRIP HEAD W/40" EXTENSION ARM $64.00
= $246 x .75 (25% discount) = $184.50

Even if you consider the matthews style spring loaded stand ($120) it's still $162. The norms with a sliding leg is only around $153. Of course, the stainless steel is probably worth the extra money if you've got them on a truck that could see the outside "elements."

Thanks for letting us know that modern does the same discount. Some of their steel stands are cheaper than norms I believe. What do you think of the quality of their combo/baby stands?

Matthew

Matthew, did this ever work for you? Did you order anything from Norms and get the 25% off? I was wondering if there is a minimum purchase. I want a 6x6 frame and only that (for now).

No, I have not ordered anything from norms. Modern Studio equipment is supposed to have better equipment, cheaper prices, and still have the 25% discount if you pay when you order. I'm probably going to with them over norms for my gear (although I have to buy track from norms because modern doesn't sell track.)

Either company, I would just give them a call and see what they can do.

Matthew

Btw, I ended up buying something from CinemaGadgets.com and it came in good time. Wow! Modern Studio Equipment is the sh1t! $135 for a 6x6 frame. That costs $250 for a Matthews from B&H! I just placed a second order from CinemaGadgets for a 2x4 wall spreader, 2x4 slider, 24x36 gel frame and 24x36 floppy, all Modern Studio Equipment. I'm saving so much money on this. The 2x4 wall spreader is almost $100 from B&H, but is only $42.50.

B&H is still cheaper on C stand kits. But for a lot of this other "grip truck" stuff, I'll be going back to CinemaGadgets.
