Moving to L.A. - Housing Questions

Wow. I have lived in Silverlake for 15 years and have never encountered anything worse than graffiti...

Being next to Echo Park, you get spill over gang activity. I lived near Sunset and Reservior. Used to hear gunshots frequently. But for real, I was out jogging with my wife, when two cars came screeching up and started exchanging gunfire right beside us.

There are a lot of socalled "Bad areas" in LA, Silverlake isn't one of them though it has pockets. Glendale definitely isn't one of them--you don't need to worry about Armenian gangsters as much as you do about the smog and maxing your visa out at the galleria. I lived in Highland Park for a long time and loved it, though there are areas that aren't so nice. Generally the whole NE part of LA City proper has the best bang for the buck, El Sereno has some great hillside homes, Eagle Rock Rocks, Atwater, they're all good. The most important thing to remember, wherever you settle, be absolutely certain you're within 5 minutes of Tommy's Burgers. Trust me on that one. Very important.

I'm partial to In N Out...but for best value for the buck, nothing beats the Zankou Chicken. The garlic paste is orgasmic. There's one in Glendale and Los Feliz.

Ahem...who said anything about good food? Or good burgers? Tommy's isn't about the food, it's about the ambience and service. It's an entire experience--it's almost like church for some of us. You and Max are so shallow. Unbelievable. Just when I thought we were starting to bond.

Didn't say anything bad about Tommy's. I go there when it's around.

In-in-out over Tommy's, Thai BBQ over Zankou. People raved about it and it was the driest chicken I've ever had.

Are you kidding me?...You must have gotten a bad piece. I urge you to try it again. I dream about their moist, garlicky chicken in my sleep.

How many times do I have to try it before I dont like it? What if it's bad the second time? Do I have to try again?

Beck: Argue with him? I cant understand a word he's saying. Didnt he just get a Playboy Playmate pregnant?

When do the freeways get packed? Here in VA Beach, I'm pretty much good except for 5pm-6pm M-F and even then - the car's always rolling. What can I look forward to in LA?

The 405 Freeway - Close to gridlocked 24 hours a day. I come in on flights at LAX at 1:00 AM and sit in bumper to bumper traffic jams at 2:00 AM, it's insane. What the hell are all of these people doing out at 2:00 AM???

101/134 Freeway - very heavy from 6:30 AM until 9:30 AM and then it gets thick again starting at about 3:00 PM all of the way until 7:30 or 8:00 PM

If you are from VA, you are going to freak out when you live in LA traffic, it's a nightmare. It is wise to try to end up near where you will work because freeway commuting sucks your life away.

I work in Burbank and used to work in Studio City. As far as pharmacist, not a whole lot there, but you could look for working at hospital phramacy or at a Kaiser facilty. As far as IT work, isn't that all off-shored to India these days?

Good luck. Be prepared for culture shock.

Dan

Just ask Ted Arabian from NH. He came out from New England and couldn't get enough Double-Doubles.

A story about In-N-Out burger...

My friend went to California for vacation and has an In-N-Out t-shirt. He wore it to school one day.

I was talking to him between classes until our school's assistant principal approached him and said, "Come with me." My friend asked where, and she said, "The office." She told him that his shirt was entirely too inappropriate for school or for society in general and that he must change... until she realized what kind of shirt it really was.

His backpack strap apparently was covering the word burger and the entire back of the shirt, and she thought it was a sexual reference.

I haven't seen it in a while, but people used to take In-n-Out Burger bumper stickers and cut them to say "In-n-Out urge". Which was meant and taken either way.

Well, that Zankou's garlic paste is like Ashura, for some of us.

You realize of course this means jihad!

You're basically obliged to keep trying it, until you like it.

Don't blame us; those are the rules, we don't make them.

Thai BBQ is good, too. Used to eat at the Cahuenga one whenever at Universal.
