Where to buy JEM Ball?

Has anyone ever used these "JEM Balls" before? I saw one used yesterday on a film shoot and I was really impressed by it.

I can't seem to find anyone carrying these and the site doesn't have any ordering information on it.... In the meantime, I'll just shoot them an email.

yeah it looks to be "under construction" pretty sweet china ball replacement though. Also got the feeling you could only buy directly from them. Keep us posted if you find any thing out like pricing, etc.
 
I wrote to the email contact on the webpage and they sent me a price list. *Very* pricey. E.g. about $500. for the smallest 19" Gemlight. I.e., they cost even more than Chimera lanterns, which aren't exactly cheap. The prices for their chinese lantern harps make the lanternlock look like a yardsale bargain.

The Gemlight looks like a very cool design and it might be worth the money, but definately not an impulse buy on my way through the checkout line...

Well that's stupid of them, why would they be even a penny more than Chimera? I own the Chimera 20" and 30" lanterns and love them, very well made!

Im looking at purchasing either a Jem or a chimera. I heard the Jem breaks down easier and some claim the light quality is softer. Anyone care to comment?
 
Way easier to assemble and more diffusion options. They really aren't any better than the chimera lanterns except they are just a bit more trendy.

Hmm. so if the price was the same which one would you choose? I'm wondering if the ease of assembling the Jem ball would make me lean that way. Since most what I do I'm on my own for.
 
If you rent it out to people, the Jem ball is an easy purchase. If you are just using it for your personal use you can get away with just using China balls and lantern locks and save yourself a lot of money.

The nice thing is the Jem ball has swappable faces. You can go between heavy and light diffusion which you can't do with the chimera.
 
If you live near L.A., it is an easy purchase. Chimera make some REALLY great lanterns. Their Pancake Lantern casts a great light for interviews and they make standard China Ball like lanterns like the Jem Ball. If you really want that kind of light and need it quick, you can get cheap China Ball that will effectively do the same thing and allow you to put it on a boom pole as well.

I should have stated that I have a couple China balls, the paper kind. Most of the time I don't bring them because they take so long to set up and I have no way to properly store/carry them, bulbs, etc. and then once I have them up, flagging them is a pain in the b-hole. So that's why I was looking at either the chimera or Jem. Don't mind paying extra if it will actually allow me to be able to use it on a regular basis which I feel that I would. If it was easier.
 
My main question which one is easier to setup, stoe and transport etc. I wouldn't normally get a kit but bh has a chimera/avenger boom kit and since I don't have a boom or menace yet I was thinking about it. I'm super anal so somehow that makes sense to me. I jut don't want to get the chimera if it's a pain to setup.
