DIY crane with pan/tilt remote head and full remote camera controls...

Hi,

this crane will be doing external shots for a feature length film on tuesday at a nuclear bunker in essex.

Should be cool, but im taking the opportunity to film it being assembled and stuff so Il stick it up on the forum.

I just hope the camera fits on my head

Awesome work, Man! That is incredible!

I have a crane but I want a remote head! (then again, there are many things that I want!!!)

Gd for you for going out there and making your own!

This is a photo of it from yesterday. There were loads of people with cameras so hopefully there will be some more pics online soon.

Unfortunately the EX1 (veeery nice camera) was much heavier, and the bloody DOP kept taping things to the front, such as the pro mist and he also put a mattebox and a big clip on shade. This made it much too heavy for the crane and it was struggling so the shot wasn't as good as it could have been. They also only had an hour of daylight left and the shot included the actress, a small boy and two teenage girls plus a goldfish in a bowl driving up the drive and we only got one shot at it, and im not sure it will be used. We didnt get enough practice at the movement...

Wow i had never seen those heads.... I decided against using servos as they cannot revolve through a full 360deg turn. Also they work in steps so the movement can be quite jerky. Also servos are vulnerable to interference and can twitch sometimes...

a common misconception of servo's is that they have limited travel. by standard - yes, but they can be modified (search google for continuous rotation servo) by removing the POT. If you order that remote head from ServoCity they can if requested modify the servo's to travel continuous in each direction.

Your band video looks great! Jibs really make these types of projects stand out from the pack!

Just out of interest, would anyone be interested in buying one of these?

I would need to know:

- How long does it take to set up (especially the first time as I would likely be renting it out)
- How much weight can it support?
- How compact can it be made to stow away?
- How easy is the variable-speed pan/tilt head to control?

Again, I love the video. GREAT work on this jib!

Hi,

I wasnt really considering selling the crane, more the remote head but in answer to your questions anyway:

- Takes me about 20mins to set up, first time would be about 30-40mins assuming they read the instructions and wernt really really stupid.
- It can safely take about 8kg at the camera end, but this will include the weight of the head. I used a sony EX1 plus filters mattebox and lots of other gadgets and it was about on its limit at about 4kg camera weight
- All the stuff excluding the three long crane sections and the base fit into one flight case. The three sections are 1.5, 1.5 and 2 meters.
- The variable speed thing is pretty easy, the further you push the joystick the faster it goes. Its quite fine controls if you nudge the joystick a mm off centre the head moves slowly.

Hi,

I have nearly finished my camera crane, just finished the electronics for the LANC controller today.

Its five meters long, 4 meters effective length. Can get about 16-17feet high. Its made of 50mm square aluminium tubing and other various bits and peices.

Here are the photos:

The controller now has a Manfrotto 521 Lanc controller mounted on one side, and the 2.5mm jack plugs into the control box. The signal to the camera is taken up an 8 core cable, same cable that carries the power and signal to the motors. Keeps it nice and neat.

Heres a video of the crane working.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rbn_EgOq1jc
see my channel for more videos.

Its been used at a music video shoot, a live event and is doing a short film on Monday.

Works well, has all the functionality of a full size jimmyjib but much cheaper...

Let me know what you think,

Pete.

Percent work on makes the remote head of derrick by example your (your recommendations of electronics AX500 and joystick Apem 5000) would ask for you alone your directs or the help how that fastens the joystick or the picture of inside that could realize how this do .

facts joystick being associate to they inputs up at Dsub putin up at a AX500 annoying. fix up book how to actualize attach at this upset. actualize to joint joystick to ground and positive settling period justly.
