Cool-Light's Blue Line body with "HMI" guts

Hey hey! My Red #27 sits on a Bogen 526. I'd kill for a good O'Connor or Sachtler but this tripod works and the $5k that could have gone for a tripod went for badly needed Red acc. (batteries, FF, filters, etc.). If I can ever get it renting out more reliably I'll eventually try for the O'Connor 1030HD or 2060HD.

Hi:

Yeah, but that's one of the one or two Bogens that are at least real heads. That one Richard has his on? I had one of those back in the early 90s, it's pretty primitive and no comparison with your head.

The 526 is rated at 35lbs max. How heavy is your fully loaded RED package with a bigger lens, just out of curiosity? I bet you are close! Or maybe not? It seems that there are SOOO many ways to outfit a RED, it must be a great experience to outfit one exactly the way you want to.

Sorry, can't help it, I have Bogen issues. I have been stuck using them for so many years that I have developed a real haterd for them as far as tripod heads although the 519 and 526 I give a pass to, they are not that bad. Back in the day, I had a BVW-D Betacam and had a Sachtler Video 18. Had to sell them off, then was using small cameras for the past few years with 501/503s because that's all the prodco I was shooting for had. But the 501 and 503? Ughh...terrible heads, not for the money, but it makes me crazy to see people with cameras that cost tens of thousands of dollars using a $150.00 head. Nothing personal ;-)

An HVX deserves at least a Cartoni Focus but really a Sachtler too.

Dan

I've got mine on an old Mod 116 head I've had for a long time. The actual tripod itself is not so bad though. Not sure of the model number on it. Overall my rig is in the 40lb range right now and this tripod and head actually do work fine but you're right a better one would be super.

I believe the DVD I saw your name on was a Paramount issue. War of the Worlds reissue where they were interviewing cast and crew members. I really loved that movie so had to pick up the DVD a (couple of years ago maybe) when it came out. Recognized your name in the credits as someone I've seen posting for quite a while here and on DVInfo.net.

Hi Richard:

Damn, wish I could shoot intructional videos with a RED! That's cool. If you need someone to come over to China to help you out on some projects, I have a long BG with that sort of thing and I have been itching to take a trip to China. I don't think that many Americans understand that China is the future as far as being an economic and entertainment economy model, I can see that you do, although are you an American?

.......

Good luck with your cam and stay in touch.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Well you never know, we may get hooked up in something where we need serious help and we can get you over here. When you get into a camera setup like this it sort of goes beyond a one person operation doesn't it?

I have no doubt you'd be a super addition to anything we do here as I can tell you have a wide variety of experience based on the posts I've seen you make.

Thanks Pure, I'll rent something to check out the BTS on it. Richand got me wanting to check it out. I would ask you for the Disney or WB projects, or ask you which of the others you like a lot but I think I am going to rent the "Wizard of Oz" DVDs... I do the Block buster mail in so I guess I need to ask for DVD 2 of 3 and 3 of 3, right? I know... it is a small little movie that hardly anyone ever saw so it might not be your best effort... but it'l have to do.

Richard, are you planning on doing any narrative stuff soon?

Hey Shawneous, nice to hear you have your Red and happy with it. I forgot you had such an early reservation. I like to see that you guys are getting serious heads for those serious cameras, too bad some of you are growing your hair like the 90's are coming back (that's me too right now) :)

Lol, since when is basic straight shoulder-length hair pulled into a pony-tail classify as "90's hair"? :-)

By my count, it's a basic style as old as antiquity that's never gone out of style, though it's never been *the* style.

Well when I see a pony I think of hair that's too long to work with so I guess I imagined it was longer :)

Shawn did you get any Cool Lights yet?

It could be 90's hair, .....1790's hair that is. In the eighteenth century it was called a cue. Among pioneers it was common for mens hair to be "plaited" which is what we would today consider braided. Also, it was not uncommon for British and American officers to have their hair on the top and sides somewhat shorter than the part that made up the cue in the back. The predecessor of todays "mullet".

Oh yeah, War of the Worlds, I did that quite a few years ago. The latest I did for Paramount was the brand new two disc of Braveheart that just came out in December. That was my cool project for '07. I was sent to Scotland to trace the life of William Wallace so I basically covered the entire width and most of the length of Scotland in about a week. It was frantic, 46 locations in 6 days. Lived on the trains and in taxis but I got to see more of Scotland than most people who live there, it was a life changing shoot.

Love to travel and shoot, that is the best.

Enjoy your RED. Are taking some classes for that thing? I would like to but first I need to get some clients that will shoot with one. Seems like lighting and shooting with it is a whole new way of thinking although I do shoot RAW with my Nikons so I get the concept and workflow.

Best,

Dan

Lighting RAW is different? Really? I shoot just hacked my Powershot A630 to shoot RAW :D but that's about it. He he...

Hey Pure, Braveheart stuck out of the list for me. Should I get that instead of Oz?

BTW, about the hair, screw all of you who are telling me I was wrong, see I was thinking of Metallica when I said 90's, but I know, I know... tat could have been 80's too... :)

Love Scotland. There was one city particularly memorable there called Troon. Big golf resort there.

I remember when I lived in Europe and traveled around extensively, the trains were definitely part of the experience.

I am enjoying the camera so far. Been having some issues in workflow and getting footage into the computer but we'll figure it out. The camera went together in about 45 minutes. There are a LOT of parts but after the first time it goes a bit quicker. It is HEAVY and will require two carrying cases for all the parts. This is not an over the shoulder camera although some will use it that way.

I probably won't take any classes as I've found a lot of it to be intuitive for focus, shutter speed and all that. Its just getting the footage into a computer and usable thats tricky right now.

RedCine and RedAlert are coming along very well. If you use a Mac with FCP studio 2, you'll be in heaven

Yea, from a power standpoint you just can-not beat buying the fastest G5. Unless you run Mac OS on a self-built and overclocked PC :)

I have no need to switch over to Apple OS for 1080 but if I had to deal with 2k or higher I'd probably be installing and learning how to gt around the interface and picking up FCP for the ridiculous benefits of truly supported 64-bit...

I can only dream of what my computer would do in comparison to what it does now

Yeah, I know but its a problem right now buying a mac machine for me. I'm pretty much a PC user and always have been. I have a big investment in PC software and hate the thought of having to duplicate that to buy a mac.

Richard, did you see my post? It isn't too hard from what I hear.

BTW, RAWs out of my consumer still camera come out COMPLETELY different, but I guess that's cause they don't get all the "enhancement" stuff processed onto them. What' does't make sense is that they take longer to record?

Lighting RAW is only different in that it's easier. There's more latitude to work with! Plus the exposure tools beat HVX, Z1u, etc. every day of the week.

Just out of curiosity, how is owning a RED working out financially? Are you renting it out or only using it for your own projects? Do people renting the RED have a clue as to how to best use it?

It's a brave new world.

I just saw it. So you're saying you'd be on FCP in a heart beat if you had to deal with 2K. RAW is it now and I guess we're going to have to start getting use to that not only in the still world but perhaps increasingly in the motion picture world too.

Did you mention something about building a Mac or did I read that wrong? I thought that movement fizzled.

2k and anything bigger.
I am just saying that for heavy footage I would want the fastest system possible and tht would be in the 64-bit world with Apple software. Also that you can install on a PC so long as your motherboard, video card and, if you use one, are compatible. There are loads of them that will work. I don't think it fizzled, just that nobody wants to go though the trouble of building. But if you don't mind then you should be able to build a BEAST.
