hey all

got a new used mac pro the other day. great specs, awesome machine. and the monitor i got for it is the acer p221w. it looked better than anything else in the store and was only 269.

if i turn the monitor on first, then the computer, the picture is perfect in every way. however, once its on like this, if i then turn the monitor off and then on again, there is some strange pixely interference. the monitor will also occasionally insist that the input is not supported. i've found that if i reboot the computer, or sleep it and then wake it up, the monitor goes back to being perfect.

likewise, if i turn the computer on before the monitor, it gets the same pixely crap.

its as if the monitor only recognizes the input video correctly if the computer is turned on after the monitor. its way strange. and though i have found a makeshift solution, i could still swap the monitor out for something else. anyone have any ideas?

Well, if there's any way to test with a different monitor, do it. Heck, go buy another one and return the one that doesn't work. I suspect it's the Acer, personally. But there's a slight chance it could be the video card.

Strange, I was going to say that it couldn't possibly be the MAC. It had to be something else.

Why you gots to hate?

i mean, it could be the mac. but i doubt it. the monitor says its "vista optimized," so I really think its just my monitor having compatability issues. so yea, maybe it is the mac. but not in the way you are saying.

its probably that my mac is too noble for this peasant, vista monitor.

I'm guessing it's because it's an Acer.

Tom -- breathe slowly at step away from the Apple products. I've got an Amiga A3000 you can tinker with.

...or you can use my Amiga 1200 if you want. I can only wonder what's grown on the mobo, it's been in my garage for ...uh what 18 years?

But seriously, try a known good display. If that one is new, maybe exchange it.

(Probably best not to listen to JasonFox right now he can't possibly be mentally stable. See his movie... February is right around the corner! I'll bet the woman is a real joy about now.)

Are there 2 video outs? One is usually dvi, and the other one can handle analog. If so, have you tried switching them? I had a weird problem with my monitor, where it would start flashing, and it turned out, I just need to switch the video.

Thanks Ming. I've actually got an A3000 myself which works great. I've got it hooked up to an LCD monitor... :)
