Cool-Light's Blue Line body with "HMI" guts

Hehehe two or three more indepth reviews with a happy ending and CoolLights will have lead times like RED has !

Hmm, that basically also means Richard becomes a billionaire and that would mean free shipping to Europe out of generosity, wouldn´t it:2vrolijk_08:? Problem solved, Richard!

Well these 150w CDMs are amazing lights. I don't think it takes anywhere near 5 mins to warm up to color temp...it feels like it reached it in 30 seconds. Some things I noted after taking it out of the box was that the ballast smells like a horse, the tilt knob on one of the fixtures was on the opposite side (that was easily switched around however), and an ARRI double scrim is a very tight fit. Richard, I wish you could've had the Cool Lights logo on the fixture itself.

Not surprising! The guy whose factory is making these fresnels for me use to be a farmer. Those guys are serious craftsmen though. I love how I can come to their place with my translator, describe what I want. Then his engineer nods and says, okay come back in 3 days. We come back and he's done what I asked for within a couple of small tweaks. That guy really gets it. We call him the "old man" because he looks like he's 60 but I later found out he was only 38 ;-). It's a pretty rough life out in the Chinese countryside...

We missed having the Cool Lights Logo on the first batch of fresnels. I was disappointed too. But I can promise you it will be on the 2nd batch for sure. We did get it on the ballasts but the silk screening was not perfect like it was on the portable flos.

Funny you should mention RED. Guess what I got this week. Old #114. Been waiting 2 years for that...

We are coming to Europe one way or another. I miss it, lived there for 5 years and that was a great time. Of course, there's no place like the USA, but Europe has a certain charm too!

PURE ENVY!
So finally a CoolLights promo trailer in 4K !

Hey Richard,
Congrats on your New lights, I hear they are the talk of the town.
Keep up the good work.

Also wish I had me an "Old Man" here in the states.

Luis

Richard:

We are going to have to have a talk. A RED sitting on a $300.00 Bogen head? Please tell me you have an O'Connor or Sachtler on order for it!

Hehe. I wondered if someone would mention that. You don't like my "ghetto" sticks? $20,000+ camera on a $300 tripod. Pretty funny isn't it. I do have an O'Connor I'm trying to get. I'm also looking for a good matte box and follow focus too. I saw a used Arri matte box on ebay right now that looked pretty nice.

Richard, have you considered the RedRock Matte at all?

Last they said was sometime Feb but they can't guarantee that, so I am guessing some time before April is quite likely.

Whew, it's bad enough when I see HVX's on a Bogen but seeing a RED on one! Cardiac arrest! You'll love the O'Connor, they are great heads, I love them.

The new Red Rock matte box looks to be excellent for the money IF they are ever available. Of course, if you want to drop more $$ commensurate with your camera, there are always Petroff, Vocas and Chrosziel. The Arri boxes are excellent but big $$.

So what are you going to do with your new RED?

Dan

He is going to provide 4k lights DIY videos for download on 56k modems!! Wooot!

Yea Richard, hope you have a nice project planned up for yourself, I will look forward to it!

EDIT: and make sure to get some BTS pics of the lighting setups!

Yeah, the Chrosziel was the one I had my eye on if I can't get a good used one. Redrock doesn't seem to be ready yet as I understand it. Birger Engineering is going to be making an interesting Canon lens adapter for the RED that I want to experiment with too. For ENG type work this may be more easy. For Cine type work of course the Cine style lenses will be better. I have the RED 18-50 now and may get some Primes in the future. Anyway, seems the Birger lens mount will allow you to use the Canon EF lenses and will have a blue tooth remote control over focus and iris control. They also plan to have an auto focus module for it in the future which could be interesting.

I plan to do some more instructional videos with it as well as potentially renting it out to help pay for it. I originally had intended to get a Thomson Infinity back at NAB 2006 but I found out about the RED just before that NAB and when I learned more about it I decided on the RED. Since then I have thought the Infinity or an HPX 500 would have been a better choice for what I do with a camera but I decided to stick with it and see if we can get some interesting results from this camera and the more "film" way of shooting things. If nothing else, in the case I don't like it, its too cumbersome and its not for me, I can always sell it or rent it and get one of the other options that I originally thought about.

By the way, I've seen some of your work Dan on DVD Special Features and I was wondering, are you using the HVX200 for everything? Some of that stuff looks darn good, more than I would have expected from a 1/3" chip camera. I saw something just a couple of weeks ago with your name in the credits.

Hey Pure, I haven't found your stuff but it is funny that Richard mentions it cause just yesterday I was looking for it. Can you link me?

Hi Richard:

Damn, wish I could shoot intructional videos with a RED! That's cool. If you need someone to come over to China to help you out on some projects, I have a long BG with that sort of thing and I have been itching to take a trip to China. I don't think that many Americans understand that China is the future as far as being an economic and entertainment economy model, I can see that you do, although are you an American?

From everything I have seen, you will love your RED although it's not a very good ENG/EFP camera. I wish I had the business to justify buying one but I don't.

As far as my work, honestly, it's a mish-mosh. I shoot all of that stuff on formats ranging from 35mm all the way down to DVX-100s but it's mostly been HVX since the beginning of 2006 when we received our first HVXs. I did shoot a piece for the Family Guy 100th Show that was shot on the HDX-900s (four of them). Most of the stuff I shot on Ugly Betty was on the Varicam. But typically the budgets for DVD Bonus material are very low so yes, the majority of it is the HVX.

Nice that you have seen some of it. As a matter of fact, it's nice when the studios even let us have credits. Typically, it varies from studio to studio. Paramount is pretty good as is Fox but Warners, Disney are tight with them and will rarely let us include any credits. or usually only on pieces over 45 minutes long, which the majority of DVD bonus and HBO First Looks are not longer than. Kind of disheartening to put your heart and soul and months of your life into a project, then have it go out without credits. It happens.

Good luck with your cam and stay in touch.

Dan

Hi U.S.:

The easiest way to track it down is to just look here on IMDB, this has most of it but not all of it http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1789409/ I work on a lot of Family Guy, Prison Break, 24, Ugly Betty as far as popular shows.

I have produced/DP'd hundreds of DVD bonus, docs, TV shows but a lot of the stuff I work on doesn't get a credit sequence. I also have worked on a lot of classic titles over the past few years so unless you watch classics, you might not have seen my work. I produced/shoot a several docs for a little project called "The Wizard of Oz" 3 DVD Collection for Warner Bros. We produced over 12 hours of bonus material for that film, it was the highlight of the past few years.

Thanks,

Dan

Hey hey! My Red #27 sits on a Bogen 526. I'd kill for a good O'Connor or Sachtler but this tripod works and the $5k that could have gone for a tripod went for badly needed Red acc. (batteries, FF, filters, etc.). If I can ever get it renting out more reliably I'll eventually try for the O'Connor 1030HD or 2060HD.
