HD Video/Aouto Out of Synch

I have a Sony HD (1080i) tape that when I look at it in Windows Medial Player, the sound and video are in synch.

However, when I import it into Premiere CS3, it is out of synch. Any ideas?

I have tried it on two external hard drives and on one internal, and always the same problem: audio is quite out of synch with video.

I've seen the same problem and it is a known issue with CS3 and HDV video. Try exporting a short test to see if your video is still out of sync. Most of the time my video is fine upon export, it seems like the sync problem only exists within Premiere. It could have something to do how Premiere displays the video in the trim and program windows.

I exported the whole thing and the problem still exists. Have no idea. I suppose I have to try to manual link it. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

If it's a consistently off by a few frames in every clip, you could edit the whole project, then nest your sequence into a new timeline and slide your entire audio track to sync it up. This would only take about a minute to do.

Thanks for the pointer. Not sure what you mean when you say "edit the whole project."

Right now I have audio and video in the timeline. They are linked by not in synch. I can unlink them. Is that what you are suggesting?

Thanks,

Michael

I'm assuming you used Premiere to capture your tape. It's been my experience that any HDV footage captured for longer than 10-15 minutes will experience audio drift within Premiere. There are several work around.

1) Unlink the audio and resync
2) Recapture your tape, but in 5 minutes increment (there's no scene detection in CS3 for HDV unfortunately)
3) Download HDVsplit which is a free capture utility and use that instead of Premiere in the future. This is the best way in my opinion.

Thanks much for the suggestions. When you say unlink the audio and resynch, I understand you to mean manually resynch it. There is a command to resynch (I believe) but how does it work? I did try that, but no change. Perhaps I was doing it incorrectly.

I don't believe there's an automatic resync function in Premiere. I can't imagine how it would work in any case since the amount of drifting varies every time. For me sometimes it's 8 frames off, sometimes it's 12 and on one occasion it's about 10-20 seconds off.
