Advanced color correction with Premiere?

Does Premiere or AE suppor the use of IT8 color targets? I know I can white balance off a grey card but going even beyond that, are there any tools or plugins or whatever that will allow me to use an IT8 color target with my video? I use these with still work all the time but I'm not sure if color management is really all that mature in the video market/workflow.

I dont know about IT8 Targets but are you using the scopes at all with your color management and grading?

W/B off the scopes and a grey card should do what you want.

Ok,

Basically, my question is that are there any other color correction practices other than WB in premiere. The IT8 charts not only correct for WB but the tonal response of all the color channels as well. You can have a good WB and still be off in other places. WB doesn't guarantee a 100% corrected image.

There are many CC practices avalable in Premiere without resorting to
any plug-ins.

Levels, Curves, 3 way Color Corrector, Secondary Color Correction, Hue Correction, RGB CC.... endless choices...

I always do Levels first and I do that in B&W (that is good practice).

Basically I correct the linput / output evels exactly as one would with Photoshop. (Its the same interface) I ensure that I have the range of greyscale across the image that I want. I do this by switching my monitor to B&W mode and using the waveform scopes to maintain whites /blacks and mid tones.

It is important that this is done before any CC work is done. If you change a level after you have CC'd an image the color will change also... so you end up chasing your tail.

There is an excellent CC book available . Cant remember the title or author because I read it a long time ago but most of my learning came from sitting beside telecine colorists for hours and hours over the years.

The endless choice is a problem. I have yet to find a reference that shows when to use which. If you could remember the CC book or at least some clues on how to find it that would be great.

I frequently have to color match between different cameras (from consumer to prosumer) and it is always a frustrating task. Frustrating because I don't have a well defined procedure to follow, even though I have seemingly lots of tools available.

The endless choices should not confuse you. SOme are for "correction" and some are for "grading/looks"

Have a play with each to learn what each does. You never need to use them all at the same time as each has a its own function.

Matching cameras (different consumer makes/models) is very difficult and I would not expect a perfect result.

This book will give you some good tips and proper procedures.
