Sci fi / fantasy where have they gone?

Galaxy Quest is a lot of fun.

I may have said this here before... and it may seem like a joke, but it ain't... I've always thought that the leader of the "friendly" aliens in Galaxy Quest was one of the most incredible acting jobs of all time. The movie is overall fun and enjoyable, and very re-watchable - though I wouldn't list it as a "greatest of all time". But that performance certainly was!

Just watched Back to Future (again) last night. Even after 20 years it's still a great film and handles the complexities of time travel better than most modern films.

I was going to make a comment about the ludicrousness of "Galaxy Quest" being in the top 25 greatest sci-fi works, but then I read the rest of the list.

I thought Galaxy Quest was great fun. But I never really thought of it as a Sci-Fi flick. Kinda like Spaceballs, it's more like a parody.

And yeah PK, I think BTF is a very well-done film. I still remember seeing that in the theatres.

the first love scene i saw as a child was with patrick stewart in "lifeforce". I am still disturbed.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

I'm very happy to have experienced the original theatrical release, and can remember that particular moment in the movie like it was yesterday. I was about 12 at the time and BR completely blew my mind. Star Wars was one thing, but BR was quite another entirely. When I see actors from BR in films I think of them as their characters in BR., i.e. William Sanderson in Deadwood is J.F Sebastian playing E.B. Farnum.

Speaking of that time period Heavy Metal was pretty damn cool too. I remember sneaking into that one as it was R. That was so badass, especially at that age.
"Wow 18 years of nothing and then twice in one day!"

It's not a movie, but a TV series, but you also might check out:

FARSCAPE

Great characters, including one of the best bad guys ever, SCORPIUS, and the creatures are just about all puppets. Created by the Henson company.

No, no, no, no, no. Unless you like flatulent muppets, characters that would make "MARINE" from Doom a deep, complex man, cheesy CGI-effects, synth music sounding like a fusion between Vangelis and Amiga games, plot, dialog and story arcs written by overweight 15-year-old boys with Marylin Manson rub-on tatoos embroidered under their I HEART SPOCK t-shirts, and the acting comparable to a coked-up Vin Diesel who'd forgotten his crotch-stuffing manhancer.

I admit though, the art design was pretty good. Too bad the show completely sucked in every other way imaginable.

No way, I completely loved Farscape. Everything you said was spot on besides the acting being bad, but those things were part of the charm. The writing wasn't horrible either. Remember this was before the likes of Battlestar Galactica... we hadn't been spoiled yet. Name a single sci-fi series.. EVER that wasn't cheesy. Yeh- I didn't think so.
Space drama.. its hard to take it seriously, especially after 5 years when the "hi tech, futuristic, alien" gadgetry starts showing its age. Always with a grain of salt.
