If you are considering a shotgun/cardioid...

If only it were that easy...

That would take me off of the lavaliere article, I am already hitting up Sennheiser to send me their lavs so they probably will not also send me another mic.

I could update and add all of the mics I could not include before but time = money as you know.

Best,

Dan
ask trew audio send you one as they got indy supporter I,you can ask glen and send my hello

excellent article, congrats. that really is an excellent contribution to this forum, so thank you for doing it.

Hi Tim:

Thanks for the praise, it is very much appreciated. The best part about this one is that I think it will be relevant for a long time. Audio is great, it doesn't change nearly as much a cameras and computers.

All my best,

Dan

Yeah, I'd even go so far as to say that this should be a sticky, and possibly even in the place of the previous shotgun comparison, which is so diluted a thread that it seems to cause more questions than answers for new audio people.

That's up to the powers that be for DVX User. The article will basically be up forever so it's not like it will ever get diluted or change.

Thanks for the vote.

Dan

Great article, Dan. Thanks for doing the work and sharing with us. I would second making this a sticky, too. But I would suggest keeping the previous comparison, because there are different microphones tested.

he did not done any tests with rf or humidity - so really there is alot of info but sertanly not complete .

Oleg,

What kind of effect does rf and humidity have on microphones? And how do they affect the different mics that were tested?

cell phones relly make bad for part of the mics . humidity make them ring ( espessially schoeps and neumans )
usially sennheiser are the most prone for both

Great article Dan. I now at least know something in the realm of audio. To hightlite my ignorance please forgive the following question. Is it possible to camera mount super/hyper/cardioid mics, not just short shotgun ones? I know you're deadset against against all camera mounted mics, but it's the only road I've got and I feel the cardioid family is better suited for my needs than shotguns.

Hi:

Thanks for the feedback on the article, glad it was helpful to you.

Sure, you can physically mount a cardioid but it will undoubtedly pickup even more camera noise/zoom noise, etc. since it has a wider angle of acceptance than a shotgun. You already know the deal, it is always better to get the mic closer to the sound source. Unless you are doing your shooting from less than 2' away from the sound source, you will not get very good sound, unless you are just recording ambience.

Best of luck to you,

Dan

great article!

more information like that is what people need.

also, an 8- from oleg is like a 9 1/2 from most anyone else!

i have been meaning to try and use my cmc6/mk41/cut1 outdoors more...

with my new rycote modular zepp. it sure makes changing mics and/or changing the level of wind protection much more practical.

so one could use the rycote mod. with just the shockmount indoors and then when you have to do ext. stuff put on the basic zepp. and then even the heavy wind cover.

i do a lot of shorts and small budget/small crew-rapid almost run-n-gun pace stuff so stopping to change mics and going from int. to ext. can be a lot more of a time issue than for most any other type of production.

Thanks Oleg. I didn't realize that rf and humidity had such effects. It's humid most of the time here in Florida, so it's nice to know.

So for the high end mics, it seems the Sanken is most immune ?

i never had any problem with humidity with cs-3 , cell phones - ohh ye
Oleg you probably know about this
Connecting pin one on the female XLR connector to the shell lug on the connector may resolve the RFI issue
I got this recommendation from the Neumann forum because Cell phones were killing my KM184. I worked pretty well.

it depends on the mic , and cell phone signal ( tdma , gsp), some need capasitors as well to filter the signal .
schoeps could make some improvments for cmc-6 but not for 5
my sennheisers dead pruff for am modulation from zaxcom when my neumans cant handle it at all with or without aditional filtering ,
neumann quit sucks for ani rfi

It's weird I got a lot of RF problem with a Km 184 but never my KM185. I shoot in a place where RF it's pretty bad. A Neumann guy told me to check Serial numbers because they improved some of them. The Km184 was a real pain

Interesting stuff guys, I have never had any sort of RF issues with wired mics. Wireless? Definitely but I did not know it could be such a problem with a wired mic.

Best,

Dan

I just stumbled into this thread and I have to second that motion.
It would be a shame for Dans article to get buried in a thread. For all the effort you put into this, you did this community one hell of a service Dan.
THANK YOU.

1 STICKY FOR DAN PLEASE!

Hi GCO:

Thanks for the positive feedback, I am so glad you found the article to be helpful. It is my goal to eventually test/review and write about the entire audio chain. Next up are lavalieres (working on it now), then eventually we will do mixers, wireless, mic support (boom poles/mic mounts/wind support). Then I can move on to other non-audio subjects like I used to write about.

Not sure if any of the moderators will make the link a sticky, it would be nice if they do.

All my best,

Dan
