Best movie of 2007 so far.....

I'll restore this thread as we are nearly ending the year, and all* films are out.

So far my favorites are:
No Country for Old Men
Das Leben Der Anderen (if that counts)
Zodiac (definitely underrated)

Almost there:
Into the Wild (minus the bar scene, narration, and the random look into the camera)
American Gangster (saw it with a friend who isn't into film that said things like "dude that's a good shot"... probably why it isn't on my list)
Grindhouse (a let-down for me from two directors I respect a lot, but still quite entertaining)

Films I didn't care for that many loved:
300
Superbad

Still need to see:
3:10 to Yuma
Juno
Bourne Ultimatum
Darjeeling Limited
Charlie Wilson's War

*There Will Be Blood - I have tickets to the midnight showing tomorrow night. I'm afraid that I'm going in with too high of expectations, but I just re-watched all of PT's films and I don't think I'll be disappointed! (I hate exclamation marks dearly but it is the only way to show my emotion--aside from an onomatopoeia)

Oh what the heck...

Woo!

Boy... I found this whole year of flicks to be kinda forgettable. I can't say I saw (or wanted to see) a huge number of flicks... but of the 20-30 I did see, none are really great. I'd have to say the Kite Runner was the best of the lot, but still not as impactful as the book. A blah year, all in all...

Wow, I was just about to say the opposite.

I guess this is the first year I've been seeing a high number of films in theaters -- the way they are meant to be seen. That could be it.

No Country is in my top 10, so I cannot say that this year has let me down.

No Country, Juno, and Darjeeling Limited were my top three in no real order, I liked them all for different reasons.

I thought Juno was written pretty badly, which made the acting sort of an impossible struggle. They just couldn't bear to cut a single witicism... not bad, but in the end not really memorable, either... a few years from now it's certainly not going to be on my mind at all... I didn't see Darjeeling, but do have hopes for it!

i would put charlie wilson war but it was maybe too light hearted for me but ps hoffman was the best part of the film.

Spidey, after all you've said about movies in the past, I CANNOT believe your complaint about this was that it was too light hearted. Granted, Sorkin used comedy to get his point across, but it was, in the end, a serious movie about a serious subject that found a way to present itself that would be accessible to the masses. Aaron Sorkin is one of the best writers Hollywood has going these days and he has a way of making a statement without alienating his audience...read: A Few Good Men and The West Wing.

This tends to promote the idea that comedy can't be serious in its subject matter and that its pap for the masses. (and considering your DramaFest entry, I find this quite a dichotomy) Comedy and comedians have for ages, addressed the most important subjects of our time.

it was too light heart i thought maybe there would be a turn or something but it only happend like once in the movie when charlies sees the fugee camps. i dunno plus i said like the movie just dont like the ending montage felt tacted on. like you get the point you know what i mean but i love the zen teaching at the end. like the movie just thought it was too i dunno.

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men

and Once made me almost discharge salty fluid from my eyes and I always have a soft spot and respect for "1st time" feature films that are actually good.

But I love the first two...can't wait to see TWBB again when it goes wider here in Toronto.
and I saw Nc4oMen 3x in the theater which is a record for me...tied with LOTR Fellowship of the ring. usually I only go once and the odd time twice if I love a movie.

I saw "Blood" last night at midnight. I loved it.

I don't know if I enjoyed in more than "No Country", but I don't see the reason to get worked up over making the decision. I won't spoil anything, so don't worry.

Each scene was so full of emotion that it was ridiculous. Best acting of any film this year, and best direction; however, the people I watched the film with laughed throughout at scenes definitely not intended to be funny. It really annoyed me and made the film less enjoyable.

I have to say that Michael Clayton was up there with the best of them...

I was never a huge Clooney fan, but the guy can deliver....and when you get Pollack involved on screen and off, as well as Soderbergh and Minghella, you know you're probably not going to be watching junk...

Tom Wilkinson was great, Tilda Swinton was a stone cold meany (...Narnia style) and the pacing was spot on. Why can't they all be this good...?

Excellent film.

Lots of reports of people laughing, and I think I can assume which scenes they were. I think the scenes exist right at the edge of black comedy and were intended to be perversely funny in a way. It's more a nervous laughter being released. I don't think people are laughing at the scenes as much as at the outrageousness of what is happening...and hell, seeing grown men getting slapped around is just funny. It's like seeing someone getting kneed in the nuts. Even if the intent is purely vicious, it's just funny to watch.

No Country for Old Men was definitely one of the best.
Rescue Dawn and Atonement were very powerful films.
The Hoax was entertaining.
But Sunshine is probably the film I've seen the most in 2007 (just hate the 3rd act).

Atonement... blew me away.

And there goes my personal Best Picture and Directing oscar.

3:10 to Yuma was real good too.

And also... some European flix :).

Juno
Darjeeling Limited
No Country For Old Men.

but i haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet. or The Savages
