issue with importing music files in FCP 5

Most of the time I don't have any issues with importing songs into the timeline, but two problems have turned up lately. One time I tried to drag a song into the timeline and it just wouldn't go in at all. so i tried draging it into the browser anticipating putting it into the timeline from there (which is probably what i should have been doing), and it said the file was unknown. the format is m4a, and i think i've imported m4a files into FCP before, so i dont know what's going on there.
Then today i tried to import a m4p file and it was silent. when i open it up with itunes its fine, but in FCP it refuses to play back.
Are there certain formats that FCP just doesn't recognize / accept?

Hi,

You should use .aiff or .wav files really. There is an application called Switch that will convert any audio file to any audio file. Put the m4a though this first, and it should work....

Or you could just open it in Quicktime Player and export it as an AIFF file (48khz).
