Brevis Flip/ Letus Extreme/ Sony EX1

I waiting to recieve my EX-1, and I am a bit worried about the edge sharpness problem you describe. Does this apply only when you use the FLIP module? In other words will a Brevis, Achromat and spacer do just fine on the EX-1? Did you try this setup?

And by the way...I really enjoy your visual skills - even just for testing new lenses :-)

Thanks!

It is a bit hard to grasp the difference in optics from the Letus Extreme. The look so similar in design that is surprising that there are such different demands on setting the whole thing up.

I couldn't tell from your post but, have you tried the Brevis Flip setup on any of your other cameras without issue?

Disappointing to read there were glitches with the Brevis and EX1. I thought I read somewhere that with the Brevis flip you could do away with the achromat. Is this not the case with the EX1 as well?

I was hoping to get the Brevis flip as soon as I could as I want the EX1 in the next month. Might have to wait now for a solution from Brevis before buying. Hopefully Dennis is straight on the case.

Guys, we have not worked with the EX-1 directly as the camera was introduced well after the flip was engineered. Phil is testing the system without help from us (so far) and the spacing between the achromat/camera is definitely not part of our design spec. I can guarantee edge issues using the achromat so far away from the camera. Not to worry though...the flip/brevis will work just fine with that combo once we've tweaked a bit. You'll see a few more reviews shortly on the HD100, HVX200, XH-A1, and the results with those cams are quite stunning.

We'll likely pick up one of the Sony EX1s, just as we own an XH-A1 and HV20 for testing. My policy so far has been to own an example of the more popular cams in each class of camera.

Hi Dennis

I mentioned in my blog straight away that achromat spacer camera was a disaster.

How are you thinking you will be able to get it to work for me? Will I have to return the flip to you?

Thanks

Phil

Phil, I've pm'd you over at the cinevate forum. In the meantime, fire it up on your HD200. The flip will work on everything out there currently in use with the Brevis, and we'll sort the EX1 out shortly.

I have a question for someone out there that has the HVX and used the 35mm adapters Letus, Brevis, etc what are you finding out there that is the best unit to use and why?

Thanks to everyone out there that is making my experience a dream come true.

I'm a big fan of the Letus Extreme/HVX combo for many reasons, not the least of which is that it renders the image rightside up. This is becoming more universal though since Cinevate and Letus have introduced flip modules, and Redrock Micro is close to introducing their own as well.

I've used most adapters on the market, the only notable exception being the Brevis. I find the Letus Extreme the most appealing for its combination of rightside-up imagery, solid build construction, fantastic sharpness and minimal light loss, great lens mount options, and comparatively low price. You'll get many opinions as all of the adapters have vocal fans.

Well my Brevis gives me edge top edge sharpness as well on the HVX200, so is obviously every bit as good as the Letus.

I am switching from my old HVX to the new Sony EX1 next month and want the flip unit for the Brevis to make it easier to use. I am sure Dennis will rent an EX1 if he can't buy one at the moent due to them being sold out everywhere, to fix this issue.

You are asking for trouble asking which is the best one! I have had them all except the SGPro, which i have used. Today given the choice again it would be a tough fight between two of them. Both have their plusses and negatives. You all know which two I mean!

We've always been very committed to making sure our products work at the top of the heap with every camera out there. That said, if it's not working optimally with the EX1 in the configuration we sent Phil...it will be shortly :-)

PV, we're very proud of the fact that even our original customers have access (via a few upgrade parts) to what we feel is the best adapter system out there. Here's why:
  • Flipped or non-flipped performance (using the same adapter!) with two very nice 72mm removable achromats as a side benefit for extreme macro photography.
  • XY adjustment (2 on the flip) to take care of the many cameras out there with off axis imagers.
  • Industry leading light efficient performance with both little cams and big ones, in the same adapter package.
  • Micro-collimating lens mounts across our entire collection, including our very slick PL and OCT19 cinema lens mounts.
  • An industry leader at 2.3 lbs weight flipped.
  • No less than six imaging elements that can be interchanged in minutes...offering image frame widths as much as 10% wider than the SLR standard.
  • A new rails system featuring solid carbon fibre rods at half the weight and a 75% increase in stiffness over conventional 15mm stainless systems (and the quick release is coming next week...)
No other adapter has any of the above features. Add in our latest addition of live video support from our brand new facility, with a dedicated professional attending to phone calls and emails...and yep, I'm pretty confident with our product.

We're proud to be DVX site sponsors, including contributing 1st/2nd prizes to the last three DVX fests... a small way to demonstrate our gratitude for the support we've seen from the great community here.

This is the biggest plus (alongside the xy adjustment axis for the hvx), having different imaging elements is a very big plus. Although it is easy to change them I would always recommend having them in seperate Brevis housing and changing them in the field is hard to avoid getting dust in and you do need to be careful. I am lucky enough to have the three main diffusers (CF2lE arrives today) in three different Brevis adaptors making my life very easy for switching quickly. There has been constant evolving and improvements from cinevate since I got my first Brevis back in November last year. They see things that need improving and do it. Whereas say Redrock seem more focused on bringing out new accessories than tweaking and improving their M2 which really needs to be updated soon!

My latest short on my website "My Autumn's Done Come" was shot using available light inside and outside using the Letus Extreme and the EX1. Only the Brevis and the Letus Extreme have ever let me be able to shoot indoors with available light. They are also the only two adaptors that can more or less let you light for video, rather than for film like some other adaptors. After all look at the mini 35's light loss and compare that to the Letus Extreme and Brevis flip. Incredible how these small companies have constantly improved and bettered the really expensive big boys out there!

What seems to be the favorite diffuser of the Brevis users? I have had an M2 for awhile, but have always been disappointed by the light loss. I am stuck between the Brevis and Letus. Dennis, if I ordered a flipped Brevis setup, could you give my adapter the "Philip Bloom treatment EX1."

Great News!!

Great News!!

FANTASTIC NEWS!!

I have got the flip to work with the Brevis and the EX1. I haven't shot anything, that's tomorrow but it works and focuses on the GG now.

What have I done? Very little really...tried repeatedly with no success then I tried reversing the flip. When you get the flip it looks identical on either side. Especially with the logo. Is there a difference I really don't know but I removed everything and put it the other way around and hey presto...it WORKS!

I am worried that this has just been my ineptitude. If it is then I am very sorry. I shall make up for it with lovely pics. I promise. As much as I adore my extreme it's incredibly important to have competition out there as it makes everyone work harder and produce the best product for people like us!

So tomorrow I take it and my CF2LE out to shoot some pics. Wish me luck!
