Premiere Pro 2.0 Choppy Playback

Hello!

I'm trying to edit a 1080p 23.97fps project and for some reason I'm getting a strange playback where the sound is completely fine but the video is pretty choppy.

I've tried bringing SD footage into this HD timeline just to test, and when I play that back it's fine, however as soon as I resize the video to fit the 1080p, even though it's the same source file... it begins the choppy playback again.

Anybody know what I can do to fix this? Is my computer just not strong enough or something?

Thanks SOOO much in advance!

Ana

So many variables could effect performance. Try setting playback mode to Draft. You could shut down any un-needed windows processes that may be taxing your Cpu or Ram. Make sure your project settings match your footage settings. Switch off thumbnail view of your clips in your project bin. Sometimes I just have to re-boot my computer when Premiere gets laggy. Oh the joys of editing.

thank you so much! Changing playback to Draft completely fixed my problem! :)

Also, forgive my stupidity, but I was also wondering whether you had any advice on outputting. Do video cards only affect the way your video looks on the computer, or do they also affect how they're processed and the way they look when they're exported? If I remember correctly after my father bought me a video card, my graphics looked nicer on the TV, but I also might just be delusional.

I'm just debating and trying to test now whether I should work on the computers at my school (which I know are top of the line and would have whatever is needed to have a great quality output) or I'm wondering I can just edit in the convenience of my own home, export the HD finished product as an AVI, bring it to the AVID at my school where I can export it onto an HDcam tape when it's all done.

Thanks so much!

I would think that a better video card would only effect the speed of your render and playback, not the quality, and only in a program that has accelerated GPU support, like Premiere. But I'm not 100% sure. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Premiere isn't the greatest program for encoding video, so that's something to consider as well.

Hi,

Final export output quality isn't really going to be improved by the video card. As Kevin said, rendering files and preview quality and speed are.

What kind of export are you wanting to do from Premiere?

Hi Mike

I was planning on exporting an uncompressed HD avi so that I can later import that into one of the AVIDs at my school because they have an HD deck that I can export back onto.

I'm starting to think it's a bad idea though, as I can't even watch the HD footage on my computer in any of the programs either than Premiere.

Thanks

It's not very good at encoding video? Uh oh... really? As in the quality of the video won't be as crisp or something?

If you render an uncompressed AVI, the quality will be fine, it's when Premiere tries to downconvert footage that all hell breaks loose. And Premiere stinks at slow-motion. I got a hold of Vegas recently, and the slow-motion was stellar. Is your project going to be long? Because uncompressed HD files are huge. I would look into using a lossless codec like Huffyuv or the Lagarith codec. But I would check their compatability with Avid first. Personally I use Quicktime Animation, works for me.

Hi,

I agree that up to CS3 the Adobe encoding software wasn't so hot. It is better with CS3.

Less compressed CODECs like Huffy or QuickTime are good choices.

Several factors come into play trying to watch video from the hard drive - the amount of available bandwidth on the bus, the CPU cycles necessary and available, drive speed, and more.

If you want to see your stuff in real time in HD you might have to get a honking system and an accelerator card, too, but that's some major bucks.

Thank you Guys!!! I think I better just use the powerful computers at school then because it seems my computer's going to be too slow even with all the CODECS and things. Thanks for all the info!
