Panasonic's New Prosumer AVCHD Camera Mock-up

I can’t believe I haven’t posted about this camera in this forum yet but I fully agree with Barry Green. Theirs no reason for this camcorder to not have all the recording modes of AVCHD and that includes 1920x1080 24p and 1280x720 60p. I consider this the successor of the 100B and it’s about time! The style may seem ugly but in many cases the mockup looks completely different from the production model. The AVCHD specification was bumped up from 18Mbps to 24Mbps for a reason and I bet it’s for this camcorder. It shouldn’t be surprising for the picture quality to be similarly as detailed as the XDCAM EX even if the camera will have fewer pixels in the imagers although I’m hoping it gets a minimum of 1280X720.

I can’t wait till NAB to find out more about this camcorder but the camcorder that I’m really looking forward to is the successor to the HVX200. It will be a huge shocker if that camcorder gets AVC-Intra 100. This would send shockwaves all over the media. While there at it, I’m hoping they also show us a successor to the HSC1U and an HD version of the DVC30.

Barry, How bad is the AG-HMC70?

Who is it target towards and what would be it's best use.

The form factor is huge but the performance doesn't seem so great.
 
i have an uncle named joe.

I think they are targeting junior high schools with this camera.. kinda like b-b guns and training wheels. it KINDA feels like the real thing..

Bad? In what way? Picture quality is great for the price. Audio is pretty good. Manual controls are atrocious, and menu settings are extremely limited.

It's basically the exact same camcorder as the HSC1U, but stuffed into a shoulder-mount body. That's it.

Who is it target towards and what would be it's best use.

Aimed at wedding shooters or event shooters, entry-level guys who think that having a shoulder-mount form factor makes them look like a pro. (which, frankly, there's a lot of -- and it could have been a great niche product if it had acceptable styling).

It's very low cost and it's clearly entry-level.
 
Regarding the AG-HMC70, I thought Panasonic wasn't going to release anymore SD cameras, and just push the DVCPRO HD and AVCHD codecs. Or is the AG-HMC70 HD?! I'm so confused.

Well, it itself is ugly (hence why I called it the UglyCam!) But it doesn't make ugly images; the images are very very nice. I saw some footage from it dowin in Australia and was really surprised at just how good it (the footage) looked.

that duck of a camera is waiting to get shaped though ,kinda like a saturn car in

When this mockup came up a year or two ago, I really liked it.

This would be something I would buy with an AVCHD codec, no doubt.
