Composition settings for 24f 1080 Canon A1 footage?

What are the composition settings I need for working with 24f HDV footage from a Canon A1? Judging from my Premiere Cineform settings they are...

23.976 framerate
1440x1080 frame size
HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)

There is no preset in AE for this and when I manually enter the settings it's not widescreen, nor does it even remotely work with my video clips. What am I doing wrong?

Is all 1080i HDV footage from Canon Anamorphic? Is that the desired ratio for DVD?

What version of AE are you using?
AE has never worked well with MPEG based codecs like HDV. Supposedly they've made some improvements for working with MPEG in CS3. The more recent versions, AE7 & CS3 should have presets for HDV.

Regarding your other questios:
All HDV footage is anamorphic.
The DVD (standard definition) is whatever you want it to be - letterboxed, 4:3 center cut or anamorphic. It's more of a personal preference thing than a desired ratio.

I am using AE CS3. They do have HDV presets, but I must be doing something wrong. Because when I select them or manually enter the settings the composition looks 4:3 and is never widescreen. Only time I can get the widescreen ratio is when selecting a DV preset, then of course the composition is much to small, among other things.

That's because it's not widescreen, HDV resolution is 1440x1080, which is not quite widescreen, and AE is interpreting it correctly.

It's not a big deal. Work with it as is and export out as 1440x1080, your NLE will make it 1920 x 1080.
